Any ideas on how to treat gastroenteritis? And at what point do I go to the doctor? Any ways to treat naturally even if it's bacterial? I've had stomach cramps since Sunday (so 4 days now) with diarrhea and nausea. No blood in stools but at times it's like water (TMI, I know). Here's the history.
SUNDAY
It hit suddenly about 1:00 on Sunday afternoon, after eating lunch at a restaurant. I had mild cramps and loose stools (2-3x) the rest of the day/evg. Some mild chills overnight.
MONDAY
Monday morning cramping was so bad it was almost like labour pains with really bad diarrhea. I sat on the toilet for about 20 minutes rocking back and forth with the chills etc., then it subsided, I was able to get up and showered and dressed, and went to work. Felt tired and not 100%, loose stools about 3 more times that day with mild to moderate cramping all day.
TUESDAY
Still tired, one loose stool in the a.m., had a piece of pizza for lunch and two hours later I was on the toilet with mild cramps and loose stools, by 5:00 I was in AGONY - horrible cramps, pain, bad diarrhea – like straight water. Two more tiny loose stools with mild cramps before bed. Ate oatmeal – pain went away for an hour or so.
WEDNESDAY
Tired, loose stools 3-4 x that day/evg, ate Oatmeal, felt great for an hour, then mild cramps started back and lasted all day/evg. Ate a chicken pot pie about 7pm and stomach felt great until morning.
THURSDAY (today)
Medium stool when I woke up, (hooray!) then 4-5 tiny loose stools all day with mild cramping all day (at Oatmeal, felt better for an hour, then cramps/diarrhea started again). Tired.
I'm drinking lots and not dehydrated. My appetite is about 65% so I'm eating, and the pain actually subsides when I eat. I'm under a lot of stress right now which is not helping, but I do feel this is a bug or something. The weird thing is my husband has it mildly, my 6 year old had it for two days, (Sun/Mon only) and my 2 year old does not have it at all.
Will acidophilus capsules help? Fresh lemon in mineral water? Ginger in hot water? Help! I had to dash out of a presentation (I was giving) to run to the bathroom and I just want the pain to go away. Any ideas on how to kill this if it's bacterial and/or lessen symptoms if it's viral and just has to run it's course?
