how did your child do drinking cows milk after mamas milk?

im not really sure where to post this ...

so i got pregnant and my milk dried up. i had a good supply of frozen milk that has lasted us until now, at 11 months. i knew my milk was going down, so when my ds was almost 11 months, i would give him a bottle of goats milk here and there(gentler on the tummy, i heard) and he drank it great for about three days, when i noticed a spotty rash on his diaper area and a pretty bad cough. so we stopped that. a week (and almost no mama milk) later, i tried a few bottles of cow milk, and again, he drinks it great, but i can tell he is having tummy troubles. he wakes up in the middle of the night crying, arching his back, is farting a ton! he also has a slight fever, but so do i, so i dont know if we caught a bug, or if i am sick and he is having a reaction ?!?

since he was so close to a year i was hoping to skip formula, esp since i feel the taste would be signficantly different to my milk and that the cows milk taste would be much closer.

anyways ... did anyone elses almost one-year-old react this way? or similar? or was it a smooth transition? my mama instints are going crazy and i dont know what to do!

It sounds like he might have some kind of milk allergy or intolerance -- have you talked to a pediatrician?

He might not react to it in your breastmilk, but still have a problem. And some people who can't tolerate milk can tolerate cultured products like cheese and yogurt.

so would one of the symptoms of not tolerating cow milk be fever?

Um, maybe? I'd talk to a doctor! I'm just going off of things I read in "your baby and child" type books when my own kid was a toddler ...

What type of cows/goat milk are you using? I *suddenly* became lactose intolerant maybe 7 or so years ago. I thought my body was just not accepting milk anymore. I was still able to eat cheese, yogurt, sour cream....but ice cream and milk tore my gut up

I noticed a couple of years ago that the milk we had been buying was "ultra-pasteurized" and that turned out to be the problem. Now that I found out that a local small dairy gently pasteurizes the milk, I am able to enjoy a nice tall glass anytime I want. Raw milk is illegal here, and the farmers in neighboring states have been "busted" bringing it in so many times, that it's nearly impossible to get it unless I join a 'smuggling ring' and bring the 5 or so hours east myself. I've figured that it wasn't worth it for us, since the milk here is treated very gently, and comes from grass-fed cows, no hormones, or antibiotics...it's worth the trade off to me.

If you live in a state where you can get access to raw goats milk or cow, I would try that...

Oh another thought, do you have any mama milk left? If so I would get some good quality milk and 1/2 and 1/2 it for a while till he gets accustomed to it.

Good luck!
