Mops... manual or steam and which one?

Yes, it's another mop thread!

What do you use?

I've been using a manual mop, the kind with the roll bars that swish out the sponge head. It's okay... but I've moved into a new place that gets a LOT dirtier that the old place due to a big old cast iron cookstove in my kitchen. Between the ash and soot and wood chips, it's harder to keep clean. (Not that was some great domestic goddess at the old house either....)

Well anyways, in moving and cleaninge the old house, my mop has seen better days. A new sponge head replacement isn't going to cut it any more, so I have to replace the mop regardless.

Kitchen and hallway floor is some sort of vinyl flooring (? - I assume?) and rest of the house has hard wood floor of some sort. We do have some rugs in select places, but the real issue is the kitchen floor that is covered in soot after being swept clean.

Any recommendations of what you might use? With bonus points given for those that have ash and soot issues like ourselves?

thanks

Well my soot and ass stays in the basement so I may not be very helpful. I have a mop that has a pad that snaps onto the mop and you take it off every time and wash it. I have a lot of hard floors in my house and it works great. I have several of the washable pads so I always have one clean. Then I just rinse it under running water or swish and wring out while still attached to the mop. It does a great job and is always sanitary.

Unfortunatly they don't make the one I have anymore but Im sure someone else makes something similar.
This is something like it I found

This one is more like what I have

I have heard that the steam cleaners have to me cool to add more water. I don't know if that is true, or true to every model, but anyhow. Hope this helped some.

We have this mop with the chenille pad and I absolutely love it. I have a few of the pads and just wash it after I use it.

No ash, but our floors can get dirty quick. I have a Shark Steam Mop. Love it. Got it at Sam's Club.

My ass would stay in the basement too if it meant I didn't have to clean the floors!

I have a Hoover Floormate, which has replaced the mop for me. Not that I ever really used the mop, but I can load this thing with hot water and BS and in half an hour all the floors are done (all hardwood). I do have to vacuum first, since it doesn't do chunky stuff, but it's pretty good at getting the floor clean (at least the water is sufficiently filthy when you're done).

We have the older model which doesn't have brushes to scrub the floor, but the newer models do, which I imagine would be even better for you.

The Shark Steam mop is pretty amazing. The heating and cooling does not take much time. If you have hard water, they rec distilled water.

No ash here, but I have the Shark steam mop deal from Costco. Most of my house is hardwood, with some tile and vinyl thrown in. I love it.

I love my Shark steam mop...the one that's $79 at Target. I had a Monster one before this that worked great but was too tall to get under my cabinet edges! We have tile in the kitchen, bathrooms and laundry and I didn't have the grout sealed so the steam mop really has made cleaning a LOT easier!

So, it sounds like technology is winning in this thread. I'll have to check out the Shark and Hoover, thanks ladies!

Eureka Enviro Steam mop. Read the reviews on Amazon, that's what decided me. I love it. I tried every mop system for our tile floor--I've got a baby, dog, preschooler, pool and dirt yard so my floors get super gross. I wouldn't go so far to say I now love mopping, but my steam mop makes it sooo much easier. I'll never go back to a manual mop.

at the ass in the basement not cleaning the floors

What I do instead of mopping, and I got the idea off of someone here at MDC, is I walk around the kitchen floor on rags soaked in diluted scented vinegar, then I walk over it again with a towel. However, we don't have soot or anything like that! I wish I had a steam mop, but I can't justify it just for our little bitty kitchen and bathroom. If I had a good reason like you do, I would definitely go for it!
