in AZ;
-Flagstaff (very spendy though)
-Sedona (but it's more out there with $$$, craxxy's and yuppies now)

-Tucson or Payson (would be my top pick as far as cities) though I don't know how crunchy Payson is I LOVE it there on the rim! Tucson is VERY crunchy.
-Bisbee, Tubac, Amado & Patagonia (my top picks as far as smaller towns and all full of old (and young) hippies and artists basically and very crunchy.)
Phoenix is so large there are crunchy pockets all over. But it's too huge for me. I lived thjere fopr awhile in my early 20's and though I liked it alot at the time it wouldn't be my top pick unless it was work related. It is so spread out and there are no trains or reliable bus system (Plus it's SUPER hot in summer-give me high desert anyday!)
IMHO wherever there are big colleges (there are 3 large schools-NAU-Flagstaff, UOA-Tucson and ASU-Tempe) and then there are many smaller ones and there seem to be crunchy areas there.
The closer you get to the border the more BF and intactness is widely (not only acceptable) but the NORM. I lived there for 15 years and about 10 years right on the border. LOVE Arizona!

my favorite place to live and I won't get back there a moment too soon!
