The title pretty much says it all. So what are they? I've never been to either state but am looking for crunchy-ish cities on the west side of the country. TIA!

Salt Lake for sure in Utah! Summertime is the best time to visit, we have lots of arts and music festivals.

For Arizona, Tucson seems crunchier than Phoenix (granted, I haven't spent a TON of time in Phoenix, but from what I've seen....). Up in northern Arizona, Sedona's crunchy for sure. Down here again in southern Arizona, Bisbee's another small crunchy place.

I think Flagstaff is more crunchy than Sedona. I know Sedona has that image, so that attracts alot of wannabes. There are some, to be sure, but I've seen more granolas in Flag than Sedona.

I lived in Flag for about 5 years. It's pretty crunchy, yes, but too much of the crunchiness came from what we called trippies-- trust fund hippies. Kids who wanted to be hippies but also wanted to keep their Range Rovers, etc. But that whole little area-- Flag, Sedona, Oak Creek-- is a good place overall for crunchiness. You just learn to weed out the folks who are playing around.

in AZ;

-Flagstaff (very spendy though)
-Sedona (but it's more out there with $$$, craxxy's and yuppies now)
-Tucson or Payson (would be my top pick as far as cities) though I don't know how crunchy Payson is I LOVE it there on the rim! Tucson is VERY crunchy.
-Bisbee, Tubac, Amado & Patagonia (my top picks as far as smaller towns and all full of old (and young) hippies and artists basically and very crunchy.)

Phoenix is so large there are crunchy pockets all over. But it's too huge for me. I lived thjere fopr awhile in my early 20's and though I liked it alot at the time it wouldn't be my top pick unless it was work related. It is so spread out and there are no trains or reliable bus system (Plus it's SUPER hot in summer-give me high desert anyday!)

IMHO wherever there are big colleges (there are 3 large schools-NAU-Flagstaff, UOA-Tucson and ASU-Tempe) and then there are many smaller ones and there seem to be crunchy areas there.

The closer you get to the border the more BF and intactness is widely (not only acceptable) but the NORM. I lived there for 15 years and about 10 years right on the border. LOVE Arizona! my favorite place to live and I won't get back there a moment too soon!

I think SLC is the only city moderately crunchy in Utah. In Northern Utah, anyway.

Maybe Moab, Utah too?
