looking for more things to make with cookie cutters!

DD loves playing cookie cutters with play-doh. I was thinking she would be elated to be able to eat some of her creations, but I'm not thrilled about making sugar cookies (the typical thing one makes with cookie cutters) since our family eats very few desserts. So I'm looking for other ideas.

I know I could cut out sandwiches, but it seems wasteful. I guess I'd get to eat all the crusts and unused parts -- not the end of the world.

Ditto for pancakes.

Does anyone have recipes that involve rolling out dough, sort of like for sugar cookies, that aren't very sweet? Hmm, we could try biscuits -- hadn't thought of that before -- although when they puff up it might be hard to see the shapes.

Any other cookie cutter ideas?

Mashed potato/sweet potato animals?

Vegan "jello" jigglers?

Pineapple/mango apple animals?

Slices of cheese make great cookie cutter things, especially with small cookie cutters.

You can also cut slices of fruit, veggies (e.g. jicama).

What you do is use the cut out shapes for one thing, and the slices with the holes for another thing. e.g. make two sandwichs, one has a star on top, one has a star-shaped hole that lets you see the filling.

I have a soup recipe that calls for large square dumplings. We use cookie cutters for those. DD love's making "her" soup and picking out which cutters to use.

We make the best Cheese Crackers in the world. Seriosly these are amazing. Everyone who trys them loves them. Here is the recipe you can cut out any shape you like though we usually use a pizza cutter and make rectangles.

Cheddar Cheese Cracker Recipe

1 Stick of Butter - at room temperature
2 Cups Sharp Cheddar Cheese
1 1/2 Cups All Purpose Flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper,or Paprika

1. Preheat your oven to 325° and get out your food processor.
2. Throw all of those ingredients into the food processor and pulse until well mixed, about 10 times.
3. Dump the mixture out onto a lightly floured surface and use your hands to bring it together forming a ball of dough.
4. If the consistency allows, roll the dough out into a very thin layer. Maybe 1/8 inch. If the dough is too loose to roll, toss it into the fridge for 15 minutes.
5. Once rolled out, cut the crackers. You can use cookie cutters here if you would like fancy shapes, but I just used a pizza cutter for basic crackers. It's your call.
6. Place the crackers onto a cookie sheet
7. Bake for 11 minutes or until the crackers start to get just golden on the edges.
8. Place on a cooling rack until the crackers are no longer warm.
9. Agree to never buy cheese crackers at the store again.
These crackers are so light and airy, you'll wonder why you never made them before. Check out the way these look on the inside:

Hey I found that recipe before when I was looking to find out what "cheese straws" were. It IS awesome.

I've made lots of gingerbread men with ds using spelt flour and agave. I think I just googled recipes and adapted as needed. You could even sweeten with apple sauce and I bet your dd would think they were delicious, since she isn't used to sweets.

Another thing I've done is make regular cookies but given them away. How about as Easter gifts?

or find a healthier version of a sugar cookie and have your LO cut out shapes to bake and gift as a gift to others. family/ friends/ neighbors

I like the cheese cracker idea- I'll have to try it! yum!

So many good ideas!

For anyone who hasn't already checked it out, the "things to do with cookie cutters" link that tbone_kneegrabber posted above is particularly incredible.

one thing that no one has pointed out is that while the shape iteslf is pretty neat, the shape leftover outside the cutter is just the negative image... so for valentine's day for example, I made heart shaped toast for DD, she got one peice that was the shape of a heart, the other peice was a regular peice of toast with a heart shaped hole! She thought both were equally as cool.

My kids' favorite thing is to make crust cookies, cut out from pie crust. There's not a whole lot of nutritional value to pie crust, but there also isn't a lot of sugar, if that's your concern. And it's the right consistency to roll out and cut and then re-roll and cut.

I think poor Santa Claus actually got crust cookies this year instead of sugary ones.
