giving an 11month old a little rice milk

Hi all,

I have decided to take an abs class to get back in shape from my last 2 pregnancies. I just signed up for a class 2 minutes from me. It is 2 a week for an hour so the most I am absent is an hour and 10 minutes. I find pumping for that small time will be so much work especially right now when my breast are sore and one is still healing from a sneezng incident that left cuts.

I ususally feed her then leave for class right after which starts at 8pm. So far I have been to 2 classes and DH has said she is usally ok. First time she was fine until 15 minutes before I reach home but DH just walked around with her. The other time he said he gave her a little ricemilk - which I told him he can always gave her some food or a little ricemilk if needed. I am now wondering if it is ok to gave her ricemilk(not more than an ounce - an ounce and a half) or should I pump when I can.

Rice milk really doesn't have too much in the way a decent nutritional profile.

I would either offer solids with some water or offer expressed milk.

an hour or 2 doesn't seem very long at all to go without eating, especially for an 11 month-old.
i wouldn't bother pumping, and especially not if it's going to hurt.
i'd go with a snack or some water. i think hunger and thirst are often confused, no?

but wouldn't solids and ricemilk have more nutrients than just solids and water? (it is enriched ricemilk not sure about all the different types out there).

Ricemilk is loaded with sugar and low protein. If I were in your situation, I personally would opt for water with quality solids (dense nutrients) as pumping is too painful. Perhaps coconut milk yogurt would be good in this instance?

We think she just misses me and DH ways of settling her is eighter by walking or gaving her something to eat or drink. As I feed her right before I leave and am only gone for 1 hour and 10minutes the most.

maybe he could take her for a walk or something? my 6 mo is a little iffy with my parents as she's with me all.the.time so i always leave them the stroller. good distraction.
sounds like you've got it pretty well figured out on your own.

coconutmilk yogurt does sound better. I will look into it especially since i dont do dairy milk. I was weirded out by the ricemilk but that was the only thing we thought of.

My husband gives my 11.5 month old unsweetened coconut milk when I am away for any period of time so I don't have to pump anymore. He loves it and, although it has a higher fat content than breast milk, it's very good for him!

DH and I just had this conversation. Rice milk has evaporated cane sugar and no protein. It's pretty much sugar water with added calcium and vitamin D.

I would opt for unsweetened coconut milk, or coconut milk yogurt - although I would check for added sugars here too.

We are also looking at hemp milk, but since that is derived from nuts we're waiting. Same goes with Almond milk.

We are avoiding soy milk and cow's milk. We live in a state where we can obtain raw milk directly from the farmer and have located a decent goat farmer. We'll probably wait until our frozen milk supply runs out before switching to raw goat milk.

I don't think there is anything wrong with an ounce or two of water and food.

I agree with the others....rice milk is junk food IMHO.

At 11 months and with solids introduced, just have DH offer her some yummy foods and water. Alternatively, he could make green or fruit smoothies.

thanks for the replies.

I do remember buying coconut milk in a carton(we usuallyy buys the ones in cans for cooking) once at the organic store that I shop from. Now I am wondering if I should keep using ricemilk with 3 year old DS. We mainly use it for cereal and he drinks it once in a while.
