Is this Standard Treatment for a UTI in a Toddler?

I have a 22 month DD. She was in pain peeing and had a strong smell to her urine so we brought her to the dr for abx suspecting UTI. We decided not to go the natural route because we was in pain and dislikes cranberries. This is her first UTI.

The dr took a urine sample and perscribed abx. It was also cultered it and it is an E-Coli UTI.

The question I had is what would be standard treatment for a first time case? She is on a 10 day course of ABX. They want further testing including another sample and an ultrasound afterward. That's all the dr would go into detail over the testing. The sample alone was very tramatic for DD so we want to avoid this if it's unnecessary.

This seems excessive to both me and DH since this is not recurrent and she has no signs of kidney infection. What is normal for a toddler?

I would follow up with a second culture to make sure it has cleared up but I would have them give me a cup and help her pee in it at home. You should be able to get a clean catch if she's well rested, not hungry, make a game out of peeing in the cup, etc.

My son had a UTI when he was four and it took forever to clear it up. Four rounds of medication if I remember correctly. Finally, we realized what was causing it (he was learning to wipe himself and he would first wipe his bottom and then dab his penis to get the pee drip off). He kept re-infecting himself. I never thought I'd have to explain to a boy to wipe "front to back" so to speak.

He had an ultrasound after the second infection. By the fourth round of medicine the docs wanted to do a VCUG - instead we asked for a more potent antibiotic, a longer course for it and also found out about his wiping at the same time so we were able to clear it up.

Best wishes.
