Another "Would You Eat It?" thread...

We were given some venison summer sausage as a gift...it had been frozen (was given to us frozen) Well, we drove the 4 hours home and forgot about it...so it sat in the trunk the next day until DH got home. It still smells fine and tastes fine.

I ate a couple of pieces a few hours ago and I'm not feeling sick or anything...

My son (11 months) loves summer sausage...

Would you eat it? Share it with a baby?

Nuh-uh. Unless it was below freezing--way below freezing--outside all the next day (not likely), I wouldn't chance it. How many hours are we talkinga about? It probably didn't stay frozen for longer than a few hours. It's made with ground meat, right? That must be so disappointing.

Damn...

Like a whole day in the trunk...

I still feel fine...

Considering the fact that we get summer sausage via the USPS every year, I wouldn't have a problem with it. Not like it was refrigerated in the week it took to make it cross-country.

Hmmm. We keep our venison summer sausage frozen, but isn't summer sausage by definition "cured" in some way? As in, it should be fine at room temperature for extended periods of time?

I don't know. I DO know that my DH would eat it, no questions asked. No WAY would he let that deliciousness go to waste, especially if an experimental few bites didn't have any adverse effects.

And it's sold room temp at the store...

This was my thought...2-3 hours with nothing...no upset stomach or anything.

I'm pretty sure I'd eat it assuming the temp outside wasn't summery. Heck depending on the outside temp, it might have been like being in the fridge all day.

Okay, I think I better look up "summer sausage."

Sorry to have alarmed you, AFWife. Better heads should prevail. Enjoy your sausage!

I'd eat it, but I really wouldn't feed it to a kid. It's so much harder when they are throwing up. I think they have less reserves or something.

summer sausage is generally smoked and cured anyways, so it's unlikely anything would be wrong with it, but I'm still not sure about feeding it to a baby... But I am super paranoid If you think it would be fine, I'm sure it is!

I had DH taste it and he suggested we toss it...it tasted saltier than the last batch. It could have just been the preparation, but we erred on the side of caution.

From Wikipedia:

Quote:
Summer sausage is the general term for any sausage that can be kept without the need of refrigeration.
Hope you didn't toss it! The saltiness might be part of what cures it.

I agree with journeymom. Summer sausage is inherently salty because it's part of the curing.

I think you would be fine

I'd have eaten it before i posted
