weaning story (i think?!)

my ds2 hasn't nursed for just over a week and hasn't asked for 4 or 5 days. i'm kind of excited! he's just shy of his third birthday. ds1 weaned at 3 years, 3 months.

a few months ago, he was nursing at bedtime, upon waking, and usually several times during the night. he would also ask to nurse during the day if he was tired, grumpy, hurt or just missed me. because he nursed so much (imo) during the night, i got in the habit of offering him a cuddle first, and then nursing if he still wanted to. so he did ask a couple times over the weekend, but both times, i offered a cuddle. i don't think he has even asked since sunday or monday.

i'm not quite certain yet that he has weaned for real. if not, that's fine. if so, that's great! i've been bf'ing since my older son was born 4.5 years ago (with 21 months of tandem nursing). it will be cool to move on to another phase of motherhood.

i'm a little reluctant to point out to ds that he has weaned, though. i'm afraid it will backlash into a nursing frenzy. he likes being the baby. i think i'll give it another week and then call it official. then it will be time for a party!

update! spoke too soon. ds had to nurse last night. he said there was no milk, though, so maybe he will decide to truly be done.

last night i told ds he is weaned - since it was his 3rd b'day and he hadn't nursed since early last week, and i have no more milk. he got a big smile on his face and said, "take a shower!" lol, he thinks that's how i get milk, for some reason. but he didn't ask to nurse. so yes, really this time we are done.

i can't believe i'm not nursing anyone!

Moving out to BBI since this is a combination of child-led weaning and mother-led weaning. Congrats to you and your little one!

Congrats!!!
I think it is wonderful that you were able to nurse for so long.

My lo will be three on the 22 of this month and *I* am ready for her to wean, but she is showing no signs of being ready yet.

I was planning on *helping* her wean before her third birthday, but dh was just diagnosed with cancer, so things have been kind of crazy and stressful at home. I think I am just going to wait until things settle down around our house before we consider weaning
