Is this a good method?

Sometimes DS (15months) gets excited and agressive, and he'll hit or pinch or even bite. He doesn't mean to. He he's just worked up. So when he does that I've been saying "owieee... boo hooo" and kinda fake crying. And he gets a big smile on his face and gives me a hug. So then I smile and say "thank you, all better" and hug him tight. And I think he realizes you're hurt and a hug helps you feel happy again.

Does that sound like a good system? It's something that just kinda started on it's own!

I'd be worried about that making it kind of a game for him.

I guess. He might just start hitting and hugging to see what reactions he gets.

I don't think there's anything wrong per se with what you're doing, but if you want an alternative, we correct that kind of stuff with 'gentle, hands are for hugging and loving'.

Ok. Thanks. That's more like what we were doing before. Maybe we'll go back to that.

I want to caution that the use of "fake crying" can be a form of emotional shaming (ie. making the child feel bad for hurting you), which isn't really a form of gentle discipline at all (imo). I don't think this is the case at all with your son since he seems to recognize that hugs make things all better, but is that what you really want to teach? It's awesome to teach compassion, but if your goal is to teach that the difference between the use of "gentle hands" and "hands hurt", then I agree with Violet. I also agree with nameisrio.

My daughter understands the word "owie" because whenever she hurts herself I say "Oh no, you got an owie?" (then sometimes I'll hug her or kiss it better or tickle or whatever she needs at the time). So when she hurts me I tell her "Owie, baby. That hurts mama. Can you show me your gentle hands?" Which she will do, before offering to kiss it better.

Yea that's true.
William understands the word "owie" too. He even says it. Which is cute.
