I just learned that we are eligible for a USDA loan program. (One type is expected to run out of funding for the fiscal year by late April. The type we are eligible for is not.) I'm giving very serious consideration to moving either to the Columbia, MO area or Champaign/Urbana area.
I grew up in the KCMO suburbs, and subsequently lived in several large cities. I've never lived in a rural area. The thought of moving from a cramped apartment to a nice home for 1/2 my rent has great appeal.
Has anyone else went from major urban areas to the country? What has the process been like? Have visits to major cities for the museums, etc., been sufficient to fulfill that need? I live in Chicago, and am definitely looking foward to having space to garden, warmer weather, and far more sunshine. Chicago tends to be very gray, which I have found very difficult to deal with, more so than the cold, I think.
I'm concerned about being isolated.
Can anyone share your thoughts, experiences, suggestions on (1) the wisdom of moving and (2) easing the transition and (3) establishing roots.
I have 4 y.o. twins I plan to homeschool.
Thank you!
