Anyone ever NOT have stink issues with BumGenius? (or stinky cd in general?)

Thread Starter
We are on night 2 of cloth diapering, and even though I've had an every-two-hours waker for 6 months, I have had two nights in a row of sleeping 9 hours straight. So I'm REALLY digging BG diapers.

I'm just so nervous about the stink issue! Actually, it feels like ammonia stink in CD is just a fact of life and completely inevitable. Please tell me this is not true! I really want this to work out, esp. since I campaigned so hard for it with dh.

Any thoughts?

I've been using bg's for 3 yrs straight and never had stink issues. Ever. We have 40 bg 2.0s that DS1 has used for 3 yrs straight (hes mostly potty trianed now and only uses them at night). I did have repelling issues with them about 6 months ago after briefly switching from allens naturally to ecos detergent - after switching to planet they stopped repelling

DS2 has 3.0s and we've been using them for 7 months w/o issue now. My current wash routine is as follows:

One LONG wash w/ normal amount of detergent on cold/cold.
One LONG wash w/o detergent on HOT/Cold w/ an extra rinse.

Every once in a long while (maybe 4 or 5x a year? If that?) I'll add bleach to the 2nd wash and wash a third time on hot/cold w/ another extra rinse.

I do not have stink issues w/ my bgos, but I do things to prevent them.

-I wash in Allen's Naturally liquid (only use a tiny bit) hot wash / cold rinse + extra cold rinse. in a 1/2 to 2/3 full top loader washer set on Large load
-every 4-6m I strip my outers (hot wash w/ a tiny squirt of dawn & lots of rinses)
-every 4-6 months I bleach my mf inserts to kill any bacteria hiding in them

so far so good

i have been cding for 6 years, and have never had stink issues ever, including with my bgs. i do a long wash with a squirt of dawn, and a rinse. every once in a while ill do some extra washes on hot to help strip a little bit.

No problems after 8 months of use.

Our wash routine is a prewash, hot water wash and extra rinse on our front loader. I always add about a 1/4 cup of vinegar.

We hang dry all of our diapers.

We've been very happy with our Bum genius diapers!

No stink issues here, either. I love my bG products! I had a lot of stink issues when I CD'd my son 4 years ago; I used Purex f&c and All f&c, with the occasional Sportwash. This time around, I use my own homemade laundry detergent, cold rinse, hot wash, cold rinse. Covers hang dry, AIOs go in the dryer.

We're CDing with prefolds and Thirsties covers, but we haven't had any stink issues. The closest we've had to stink has been when we've dried our diapers in other people's dryers rather than line drying... line drying is worth trying if you're having stink.

I was about to post just about the same question today as I'm typing up instructions to post on my washer for dh or dd if they need to do a load when I can't. The BG website says use 1/4 of the detergent recommendations (we are using PLANET) in one wash on cold, and then 1/4 agin in a hot wash with a double rinse and line dry covers.....does anyone follow these instructions? I think a friend told me once she does this but does not use the detergent on the second wash as that left too many suds leading to stink later...... thoughts??

I have never had stink issues with cotton diapers.

With synthetic diapers like BG I've found it helps to wash more often and line dry. Washing on cold with no detergent, then on hot with a normal amount of detergent, then on cold again with no detergent also helps, and of course you don't have to do this every time, just as needed. Also, some people have better luck with natural detergents (I use and like Sportwash) and some people have better luck with regular detergents like Tide. A tiny amount of bleach every now and then is bad for the diapers but may be excusable as a last resort.

My kids are all out of diapers now, but I did cloth diaper all three of them over a 5 1/2 year period, and never had stink issues. Ever. And we used all sorts of diapers including BG and other synthetic pocket diapers. I did a cold prewash, then a hot wash with detergent, then sniffed. If I still smelled poo, I did a second hot wash. I put everything in the dyer. I never made any special fuss with specific types of diapers.

I had a large top-loading machine.

I never dunked or rinsed diapers, or did anything special to remove poo other than dumping what was solid and pushing the larger part of the semi-solid stuff into the toilet with a handful of toilet paper or a wipe.

I only "stripped" once, when DD2 had a persistent rash, and we thought the cause might have been hanging on in the diapers. We did eventually point to a food allergy as the cause of the rash.

I always used ordinary mainstream free-and-clear detergents-- we liked Cheer Free, or All free and clear, or even the storebrand stuff. Everything I've heard on here leads me to believe that the "natural" detergents do fine for a short time, but that they do sooner or later lead to stink and rash issues for a lot of people. Some people do fine with them. Honestly, if I had stink a change of detergent would be my first course of action.

We use Flip, a BG brand and a few BG's and have no stink problems. I wash every other day with Crunchy Clean.

I don't recall ever having stink problems with dd's diapers. We used Simple Green (2-4 squirts of the concentrated stuff) + washing soda. There's a huge long thread about that method somewhere on this site. I would usually do a cold soak for at least an hour or two and then wash on hot with an extra cold rinse at the end.

I've never had any issues with stink on my diapers unless we had a detergent issue. We use mostly pockets like BG or Tiny Tush.

I use 1/2 the amount for a small load of regular wash. Only using 7th Generation. Anything else had led to build up. Once DH bought something with essential oils in it and it was THE WORST!!!! The smell wasn't bad until the pee hit the dipe, then it was awful! Plus we started having repelling. But, that's beside the point.

As I was saying, we use about 1/2 the amount of the lowest line on the cap of 7th generation. Then we add a shake of borax into the dipes. I have decided the way I like to add the BacOut best of all is through the bleach dispenser. (although in the past I've just squirted it right in or added it to the fabric softener dispenser) Wash on hot. Unless it's summer & sunny we almost exclusively dryer dry on regular heat.

I've never had any problem with stink (except aforementioned detergent disaster) or repelling. Are you using a dry or wet pail? I only use dry, and I've heard that wet can cause more odor. Also, if you just switched to a natural detergent, there may well be buildup in your machine that is causing the dipes to stink. Try cleaning it with some vinegar or if you're inclined to use it, bleach.

i never used BG but used mainly prefolds and AIO (all cotton though) and never had a problem with stink. I was a little compulsive though about washing them usually a prewash, long wash with detergent, reg. wash no detergent on HOT with a little tea tree oil in the middle cylce.

My friend who uses BG swears by washing her diapers closed inside out so that the "interior" of the diaper is exposed and cant flip around.

Every month or so, bleach your inserts. I was SO anti-bleach until we'd had a *year* of yeasty rashes and stink. Then I bleached the h*ll out of my diaps and...no stink, no rash!

I struggled with serious stink issues in my pocket dipes forEVER. Tried everything. The only thing that helped was soaking the MF inserts overnight in the machine with a few squirts of BioKleen Bac Out. Then the stink would return unless I did that again.
FINALLY I heard about Rockin Green Detergent, and let me tell you it ROCKS. First you strip them of all the buildup with a soak, and then you just do a regular wash from thereon out. It's amazing. I used to have to do 5 or 6 extra rinses before, but now I do one cold rinse, a hot wash cycle with the detergent, and THAT's IT! I had almost given up CDing b/c the stink was so bad. You can find them at rockingreensoap.com and it's also carried in various CD websites/stores. They have a soft water and regular water formula, and are just now coming up with one for hard water.

I'm confused by people using bacout? The BG site says not to use anything with natural enzymes, and bacout has those....people really don't have a problem using it? I ask because I use it with other things.....

You know, I read this once while looking for help with stink issues, so I assumed they at BG were referring to the covers...I have Sunbaby diapers i bought off eBay, which are pretty much identical to FuzziBunz, and in the same category as BG. I washed covers and inserts separately (better results....A LOT longer and wasteful wash ) BTW w/ Rockin Green I am able to wash them all together with success, but that's beside the point...
So, I washed the covers w/ regular detergent and whatnot, but would only use the Bac Out on the MF inserts. How much damage can be done to polyester with a natural enzyme? I assumed the concern for BG was somehow on the PUL of the covers? Anyway, I never noticed anything wrong from the Bac Out addition, only TONS of suds and need for extra rinses.

You are probably not getting all of the detergent rinsed out. Make sure you use very little detergent (I use Rockin green) and really rinse them out well. I also sometimes will put white vinegar into my rinse cycle to cut the smell.

My routine: HE washer- 1 tblsp Rockin green+sanitary cycle-dry
If they are still a little stinky-extra rinse with 1/4 cup vinegar.
