snaps

I really want to use snaps on my next batch on fleece covers. My chubby girl's belly is hanging over her cover and getting scratched on the aplix. I can't afford a snap press but was thinking about the snap source setter and their metal snaps. I am also considering sew-on snaps. They are metal and sold at fabric.com. Also considering snap tape that can be sewn on.

So tell me your opinions of each?
Also, is there a functional difference in the capped and open prong snapped, or is it just preference? What size?

I'm not sure what you were going to spend on the metal snaps, but I have these snap pliers & they work great!

Sew on metal snaps take a lot of sewing to get them on firmly! And, I don't think they would take the strain of a diaper cover and would be likely to need resewing periodically. To me, they are light-duty, for invisibly closing a collar or cuff.
I've used snap tape before, and think that would probably work. It's good in that it can be cut to any length, so you can sew one snap at a time, if you want (but it's a bit awkward to get around it with the sewing machine - try the zipper foot). I can't see that it would make the cover any more prone to wicking than sewn-on velcro, either.

I think the snap pliers are your best option. I have a snap press that uses the same snaps (resin KAM snaps) and it is the kind of snap most diaper makers use. The Ebay listing linked is the same lady I buy snaps from though I joined her Yahoo group, NotionSupply. Not sure if you could get them cheaper that way. Her name is Serena and she is super! Very nice and quick to send your things.

Most diaper makers use size 20 resin snaps.

As for the metal snap setter, I've never had much success using one of those for snaps. Is it the kind where you line up some plastic pieces and then smack it with a hammer? I tried to apply snaps for a onesie with that thing once and every one of them got smashed the wrong way and they would just fall off. In the end I gave up because the prongs chewed up the fabric, there was no way a snap was going to hold it together. I do have metal snap dies for my snap press however, and it sets snaps beautifully. Never had one not take.

I didn't have a lot of success with snap pliers either. You might as well make an elastic-waisted pullup type cover out of the fleece.

I've heard some good things about snap pliers. One of the best places to get them would be through Serena on the notion supply yahoo group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/notionsupply/ I've gotten my snaps from her and the prices are right and shipping is pretty fast. I don't have the pliers, I have a press, but I've heard wonderful things about the ones she sells.

Thanks for all the replies! I looked at the pliers on ebay and then found it at the website for the KAM brand for the same price when you add the shipping. I am really wanting it!!!! It would cost about $7 more than the snap setter and 60 metal snaps from sewshoppe for the pliers and 300 snaps from KAM. So I will be trying to do it soon. Thanks so much.

oh, pull-on is not at option because I trifold pfs in the covers. I am also thinking about doing some fitteds out of rrp if since I would be getting all those snaps anyway. That way she can go coverless some in the summer

I got the snap pliers from Serena on ebay last week, I've already done one diaper and converted another. I'm in LOVE with them. THey are super easy to use, and the snaps stay put. If you order from ebay, order an extra set of snaps at the same time - while 200 seems like a lot, it's really not if you're making side-snapping, and using upwards of 12 snaps per cover.
