The thing is... a dark opk is positive and can show a second line (albeit not dark) even when not pregnant... ANY line on an hpt is positive... thus, you likely did not get a positive OPK until after you would have had a light positive hpt (and depending on the sensitivity of the HPT... that only counts for the ones that test at 25miu or less)

by 14dpo even a FRER was a very faint line for me (by 15dpo it was still very very faint... but still) this was my 15dpo FRER ---> http://canyouseealine.com/hpts/5182.jpg and they supposedly test for less than 25miu and trust me... this is a perfectly normal healthy pregnancy!

As for what else they could have used the urine for... bladder/kidney/urinary tract infection, dehydration, checking for the presence of things that would point out you may be diabetic... things that could potentially cause dizziness. Of course, you may be lucky and have a hospital that actually tests for a sensitive amount but considering you were posting that you only had faint OPKs just around when you went in... I would say its much more likely that the blood test is what picked up the pregnancy.

Just wanted to put my 2 cents in on the timing. I conceived this baby on October 7. I went to the ER for a horrible migraine on October 15, so 8 days after conception. I told them there was a good chance I was pregnant and they did a blood test. It was negative. I also remember doing a HPT around October 16 because that was about the time that af should have been arriving. That was negative as well and I just assumed my cycles were going back to weird because I'd just gone off of bc. I got my BFP on October 23 after I realized that no, it wasn't just wishful thinking on dh's part, my boobs were getting bigger. I generally have miserable morning sickness from day 1. Everything from the nausea and vomiting to UTI's and feeling faint. I had NONE of that this time until well after I got the positive. (save the migraine, but it was a highly stressful month so I doubt that had anything to do with the pregnancy)

I really hope all works out for you.

As for the getting fertilized part, I actually found out after the fact that you can still release eggs with a hormonal IUD in, but the lining is just not formed to support it. So you actually could have the egg fertilized just before the IUD is removed, (or around that same time) and fall pregnant right away if your body builds the uterine lining quick enough.

FWIW, my husband was very sad that I fell pregnant so quickly. He was looking forward to lots of "baby making practice" as he likes to call it. Let us know what you find out!

Thanks for all of teh continued support. I can't get in to see my doc until tomorrow afternoon. Still don't feel pg. Stopped peeing on sticks. Bleeding is come and go, mostly just spotting.

I've just acepted that I might not be pregnant, or that i might be miscarrying. honestly, I was kind of looking forward to teh ttc part, too. I drank last weekend and i smoked a ciagerette Saturday night. Ugh. mostly I'm not freaking out, thoguh.

Thanks for all fo the support. I'll check back in when i know more. I'm scared to post in a ddc or anythign until I know for sure.

A blood test will show as early as 4 days past implant. for a good outcome.

Dont worry, if everything is fine, that drinking likely didn't do ANYTHING to the baby. Considering how far along we figure you are, the placenta hasn't even started to function yet... so that alcohol never touched the baby.

Hi...I'm currently carrying a pregnancy conceived with a copper T paragard IUD in place. I found out I was pregnant because I was late for my period and got suspicious. I tested positive 6 days late, on Dec 1. (negative at 3 days) My LMP was Oct 26.

We did an US to try to see what was going on on Dec 3, and saw nothing. The IUD was removed Dec 4. I spotted only very briefly the day of removal, and nothing after, but I didn't spot a speck in my first pregancy either. I had a followup US on Dec 10, trying to rule out an ectopic. At that point I was starting to have pregnancy symptoms. I was dated at barely 5 weeks, rather than the 6w4d I would have been by LMP!

I'm now pushing 19 weeks, with a normal, successful and healthy pregnancy. Oh, and I had plenty of wine around Thanksgiving, and I definitely was already pregnant. It takes a couple of weeks for the placenta to form and the blood sharing to really start. Lord knows probably a gazillion mamas have a drink or do other things they wouldn't, before they realize they're pregnant. Try not to stress.

Hope this sticks for you...and don't worry....pregnancy sex is pretty great, too!

That was mine, too. Honestly, there are so many mamas here at MDC who got pregnant on IUDs, I'm really starting to questions the effectiveness rate the companies claim.

I've had plenty of women come in to my L&D ward pregnant after a tubal or partner's vasectomy as well. I think the rates are pretty on target, but we just see and remember that one in 200 or so person that they fail on!

That's probably true, but another doc friend told me she had been hearing a lot of IUD fails recently, too. I do know that mine was sitting too low in the uterus, with the stem in the cervix, which had to have caused it's ineffectivity. However, even on physical exam, this wasn't noted visually, and my strings seemed "in place" so we didn't know until the US what was going on. I think the methods for "checking" an IUD are suspect.

Yeah, it's pretty inexact. That's another reason I'm glad the husband is going to get the big snip after this kiddo is born!

I had just been into Planned Parenthood (my gynecologist who placed the IUD two years earlier worked there), and she checked it less than TWO WEEKS before I got pregnant!! Said it was "perfect."

Shuh.

I am NOT pg now, and I'm not sure that i ever was. My doctor isn't, either. My beta was <5. The test at teh er was a urine test, and she said i woulnd't be the first person to get a false positive pg test from that hospital. She said that if the urine test comes back positive they are supposed to run a blood test and they didn't. She also said they should have ruled out ecoptic right there because i had an IUD. Grrr.

I'm starting to think that the faint positive i got from the hpt i took this weekend was an evap line. It was a blue dye test which i know are infamous for thoswe. She did an ultrasound and saw nothing in my uterus. NOthing at all. My spotting has all but dried up and I'm not having any cramping.

I feel completely and totally fine. Not even a little bit pg. No cramping, no sore boobs, no nausea, nothing. I'm going back in next week to look at things again, but she said to just proceed as though i'm not pg but to call her if i start bleeding like my period is starting (or heavier, obviously), if I get bad cramps, if i get a fever, or if i have any other symptoms that worry me.

I really truly think I was never pg, that it was just a fluke. I've just nkown with all of my pregnancies, even the miscarriages. I really wanted to be pg so i was trying to find symptoms, but there just aren't any. I'm not as disappointed as i thought i'd be because i really knew i wasn't pg.

Thanks so much for all of your support. I guess i am ttc now!

Best of luck to you!

What a releif! I know that I've been worried this whole pregnancy that my lining was not in tip top shape when I got pregnant due the recent IUD removal. So you can feel good as you TTC that your body will have the chance to normalize things before starting a new little one. Good luck and lots of baby making vibes!

I started passing large clots this afternooon. C aled my doc and she said its normal. I'm having a little bit of cramping, but not too mcuh. Now i'm wondering, of course, if i was pg and am miscarrying but it doens't feel like any of my other miscarriages. i think its far more likely that the pg tests were wrong than i got pg with an IUD! My doc siad at first that this stuff would happen two to three days after it was out and it's been a week and a day, though.
