resources for learning about american music history?

having a hard time finding resources (esp. arual) for learning about american music history. don't need anything too deep and involved... i did find this at the library.. From Ragtime to Hip-hop: A Century of Black American Music

but was hoping more for a website with music samples or a book with a CD or something.

can anyone help?

Check out the Smithsonian, they have done a lot of work over the last 100 years. I'm not sure what level it's written at but it is exhaustive.

yeah, i haven't found what i wanted at the smithsonian. i need to look more i guess.

I have a degree in this. What age/ level should it be geared for?

my son is 7. he has a fairly sophisticated ear, but a short attention span. (does that help? )

will be grateful for any suggestions.
