I know in the long run it is cheaper but we barely eek by paycheck to pay check so makin that large inital investment seems impossible! I concidered tryin to make them but I can't sew on a machine to save my life, that's dhs department! And there is no time between work and sleep and his off time well he usually wants to relax working at walmart really takes a toll on him he HATES it there but its a job! So any help or ideas are appriciated thanks!

I would think prefolds or flats would be the most economical choice. Check out Little Lions (especially their "seconds" section which are $13/doz for infants) for prefolds:

I got an entire trash bag full of diapers (prefolds, covers, wool, fuzzibunz) on my local Freecycle.

Two years later, a friend was able to do the same.

So it seems that, in this area, diapers come up periodically on Freecycle. I've also seen them cheap/free on Craigslist.

I've gotten a variety of CD through Freecycle. Our local thrift stores also have them now and then and many online vendors (like Jillian's Drawers) offer gently used or seconded diapers at a discount. There is also the giving forum and the trading post here at MDC... you might find free or inexpensive used dipes there.

Prefolds and covers are the most economical... check the diapering forum for ideas on making them yourself. It's not too hard to make covers from thrift store sweaters/fleece and prefolds from cotton wash cloths (you can find big packs of terrycloth wash cloths at walmart actually) or thift store cotton shirts. And if you don't want to make them, the plastic covers (again at walmart) work fine. They're not perfect, and they're not pretty, but gerber plastic pants and a good prefold will work.

The thing is, these methods are more economical in part because they are more work or less convenient. You may find that with a third child you have less time/energy and cloth diapering might fall to the side if it's not easy to do. There are commercial diapers that are well made and not too expensive if you think you may get overwhelmes... if you perhaps purchase one diaper a week, or two diapers a month, you might have a stash by the time the babe arrived. For example, Econobum One Size dipes are under ten dollars each and you can use them with regular prefolds or with their snap in fitteds.

Good luck!

IRL friends expecally if you have a local natural mom's group! Just put out a wanted you might be surprised! Freecycle too, also you may try making a online wish list of diapers and have a baby shower A lot of people don't have baby showers after the 1st baby but if you realy need things people understand
I diapered my 1st with ratty prefolds and non waterproff covers and had a couple good friend who loaned us many for our 2nd.
Good Luck!

Check a few threads down on this same subforum, somebody is trying to figure out where to sell their used ones!
