Nighttime pullup ideas

This might not belong here, but I wasn't sure where else to go.

A little history below which you can skip...the question is at the end!
************************************************** *****
My almost 4yo ds has been experience a nasty rash on his bum for quite some time. I suspect now that it started out as a food sensitivity of some sort and he was scratching a lot. He would scratch at his bum and his neck. The neck resolved on its own but the bum thing went on. We thought it was dry skin and lotioned him up more after baths. The scratches led to cuts in the skin which allowed bacteria to enter and he ended up with a staph infection. (This is my theory, anyway, for how this escalated) So we treated that and were so hopeful that we were on the mend but it started coming back in little red bumps. This is when I started to think there was probably a food issue going on. We're now using topical homeopathy, probiotics, limiting sugar and eliminating citrus and refined sugar. I might go one week with no wheat and very low on carbs in general. I'm just not quite sure what's going on. The doctor said that sometimes when the skin gets into this state it is overreactive and takes time (combined with the other things we're doing) to resolve.
************************************************** *******

So my question to you all is a better solution to the nighttime pullup that we're using. I'm noticing that at night, his skin is so raw and I think it's partly due to the fact that the pullups are totally unbreathable. We used to use 7th Gen but they don't absorb enough so the wetness became an issue. The pullups (Huggies) keep him dry but don't allow air circulation so his bum gets so raw and he wakes up screaming.

Any ideas on a better solution that would absorb wetness but also have some breathability? A tall order, I know. I'm thinking something fleece maybe?

Thank you all SO much!! This has been a major source of stress for me as I hate seeing my baby in so much discomfort and we're trying absolutely everything we can think of to help.

Hmmm, are you open to cloth diapers as a solution? I am thinking maybe fleece or wool covers might help. Another solution might be those absorbent sheets and nothing on his bottom for a little while.

Thanks, mkksmom. I was thinking the same thing - just putting a cover under his sheet, maybe some towels and let him pee on his bedding for awhile. I think it needs air. I think the whole thing is some kind of foliculitis ...it's moving down his legs now, too, but it's just little bumps and not sores. Ugh, the whole thing is driving me mad but I know at some point this will be in the past.

Thanks again!

My 4 year old still pees in his sleep sometimes, but I find that if I take him to the bathroom to pee after he's been sleeping an hour or so, he'll usually stay dry the rest of the night. (He doesn't wake up when I take him to the bathroom.) Maybe you could try something like that to see if you can keep your DS dry at night without pullups.

Great suggestion, Daffodil. I'm thinking that the wetness and not and lack of breath ability is definitely exacerbating the problem. I think we have another issue going on with the rash itself (seeing as he doesn't wear diapers anymore, so this isn't typical diaper rash) but if I can keep him dry at night I hope it will heal.

Thanks mamas for responding. This has been hard to deal with since it's so severe and goes through times of seeming like it's getting better and then we're back again to it being really red, itchy and uncomfortable.

Has the doctor taken another look at it since it came back? Could it be fungal?
