first time yogurt making

Success!

A mama from our local AP group is from India and we got to talking about yogurt, cheese, ghee, etc. I had been hesitant to make yogurt because of fear and lack of equipment. This mama has been making yogurt her whole life (the culture she has she brought with her from India, 6 years ago) without special equipment or fancy gadgets..

at a play date she brought some of her culture for me and I made yogurt from our pastured raw milk per her instructions:

Clean your container (I used a quart glass canning jar)
Add milk
Microwave till it starts to bubble over (this will vary according to container but start at 10 minutes. Yes, I realize this is not raw milk yogurt)
Note the amount of time it takes for this container of milk to boil, this is the amount of time to use each time.
Allow milk to cool to lukewarm
Add 2 spoons of culture
Stir
Wrap container in sweaters and leave 8 to 10 hours
Once yogurt is set, refrigerate

Super tangy! Great consistency. DD loved it with maple syrup and coconut flakes. I used it in fish salad for lunch.

I've been wanting to try making my own yogurt lately. My mom was going to send me one of her yogurt makers, but this way seems pretty easy too. I'm assuming it would work just as well to heat the milk in a pan on the stove rather than the microwave?

yes, tho according to this mama, that's a very messy process... hard to clean the milk off the pan. But if I were avoiding the microwave, I would have done it that way.
