breastfeeding and anesthesia, WWYD?

Tomorrow I have to have a procedure done to remove a kidney stone. I will be put under using Midazolam (Versed) and Fentanyl. According to Kellymom the Versed has a L3 rating (Moderately Safe) and the Fentanyl has a L2 rating (Safer) It also states that as soon as you are no longer groggy from the medication, it is safe to breastfeed. Not sure if I should be even more cautious and wait several hours? Just wondering WWYD in this situation? I have pumped about 12 oz. of milk so far. This is nerve wracking! Thanks for reading!

I would breastfeed as soon as I was able to hold baby.

Both midazolam and fentanyl have short half lives. Hale says that levels of midazolam become undetectable 4 hours after administration (not 4 hours after mom wakes up).

Best wishes for the procedure, Mama!

I'm generally paranoid, so I'd probably wait a couple hours if I had some pumped milk and an older baby. But I think it's probably just fine to nurse whenever you want to. If the baby gets some of the versed, he wont' remember anyway . Totally kidding on that! GL w/ your procedure!

i'd nurse asap
"Drugs for general anaesthesia will get into the milk in only tiny amounts and are extremely unlikely to cause any effects on your baby. They usually have very short half lives and are eliminated extremely rapidly from your body. You can breastfeed as soon as you are awake and up to it. "
