9 mo. sleep regression?

I see posts that refer to the "dreaded nine month sleep regression" but can't find an explaination. Can someone help me out? What am I in for? Advice? My LO had started to get into a pattern almost 12 hours at night and two decent naps during the day (before this it was lots of interruptions and 3 short naps during th day) now things are going downhill. He's almost 9 months and just started getting himself from tummy to sitting and pulling up to standing.

I've seen this too and it happened with my DD.

Here's the reasons I've heard:

1) Separation anxiety begins
2) Teething molars
3) Brain development
4) Big growth spurt

My daughter seemed to have all of these. It didn't go away until after her birthday. But when it did...literally one night she was just back to normal. After my experience I really want to tell all mamas out there to just hang on and not do anything drastic (e.g. CIO) b/c this will pass.

We also did a couple things to help her out...we added another meal closer to bedtime and we offered Arnica tablets if she woke up crying in the night (most the time she just wanted to be latched on with her eyes closed). DH also made sure I got to sleep in as much as possible.

Thanks claddaghmom. He has just learned some new skills so I guess it's a big leap forward. It's so frustrating that he's not napping well because I can tell he's exhausted. We won't do CIO, he sleeps in our room and we're always right with hm, but sometimes when there's nothing we can do we do let him fuss.

ditto this. It was the hardest time for us. DS also improved after his birthday. Nothing we tried made any difference so I just made my sleep a priority by napping and getting lie ins as much as dh could give them.
