How do you single crochet?

My mil and I have a disagreement about how you do a single crochet. We agree on what is the back loop and what is the front loop and how to do front loop crochet and a back loop crochet. But in her mind always going through the "center" is a single crochet. In my mind always going through the center would be front loop crochet. I think that a true single crochet (that is not front or back loop) is under both loops.
I have googled and watched videos and seen pictures and I swear I'm right. But even though she doesn't do patterns nor even know how to read them, she has me thinking I'm nuts. And to be precise, I'm not talking about single crochet onto the foundation chain b/c the only place to crochet is the middle.
Can anyone settle this for me? Or many ppl?

(I hope I verbalized this correctly. I'm not good at speaking what my hands are doing).

I agree with you, Jamie. (And you explained it perfectly well!)

I find that it's a very important distinction as well. When I am crocheting caps for use as doll wigs, if I do the front loop only, the cap will be too stretchy, and the loops will open and show bald spots all over the wig. Going through both loops make the crochet work much more stable.

Thank you! I needed someone to tell me, not just a video or picture.

I agree too!

Agree. If both loops wasn't "single crochet" then the terminology for front loop and back loop would be different!

Yes, I agree a single crochet goes through both loops - otherwise front loop and back loop wouldn't be distinct from regular sc's.

I use bernat.com for reference when I forget how to do a specific crochet stitch. Their illustrations are helpful to me.

FWIW, when I am doing a single crochet into the foundation chain, I also go under both loops. Actually, that's what is illustrated above.

That's what I thought too and kept arguing with her about. (not in a mad way, just disagreeing). But it was really frustrating me b/c I've looked at videos and I use patterns and she refuses to agree. I have to give up. But I'm going off what you ladies say from here on out!
P.S. You are right about the foundation chain too!
