confused and concerned, re. juvenile diabetes (sorry so long!)

I took my son to the ped last wednesday because I thought he had a UTI. They dipped his urine in the office, and said it was negative for bacteria. They sent the sample to the lab for urinalysis. On Friday, about 10 am, they called to say the lab test did not detect bacteria, either. So I figured it must be situational or behavioral, and we'd give it a few more days to resolve itself. Then, about 5:30 in the afternoon (on a FRIDAY, mind you, grumble, grumble), the nurse called back to say that the Dr. had just looked over his results and he needs to go in tomorrow morning, "as early as possible", for a fasting test for type one diabetes. The only symptom he has is frequent urination, and lack of control, exacerbated, it seems, by immersion in water (he won't take a bath, and won't get in the pool, because he says it makes it feel like "the peepee will go spurting out all by itself"). He HAS been eating a lot, but he always eats a lot. He wet his pants twice between dinner and bedtime last night, and has woken up several times in the last week or 2 wet, but not super wet, more like he dribbled than let go completely. He hasn't lost weight, in fact he put on 2 lbs in 2 weeks. What could this be, besides diabetes?? I just can't believe he wouldn't be acting sicker if that were the case.

ETA, he'll be 6 in June, if that matters. Also, he had a serious vax reaction when he was 2, leading us to stop vaccinating altogether. Not sure if either of those things are relevant, but there you go. I really need some perspective from people who know more than I do! Thanks in advance for your replies.

So sorry mama. I'm not sure what else it could be, but the symptoms you describe would have me concerned for sure. I do not think children always lose weight at first. Hopefully it was just a fluke.

Thanks. I keep going into his room to check on him. I just want to get him in for this test so we either know, or can keep looking for, what's wrong.
