UP and UC

Cliffnotes: What do I need to know for UC? My DH is a paramedic and views CB as something requiring atleast medical observation.

So far we have had a completely unassisted pregnancy. I purchased a blood pressure cuff, fetoscope, nutrition software (not taking prenatals), and some urine test strips. The only medication I've taken has been Unisom due to being unable to keep any food down at all.

The UP seems much easier than the UC, but I realize that by having an UP, part of that is UC. I just dont know where to start for the UC. Is there a book you can recommend? How do we know if we need to transfer to the hospital (not against this by any means)? What situations are safe to manage at home? Where do I get the herbs that stop bleeding?

My husband is a paramedic and is totally fine with the UP, but looks at birth as requireing medical treatment. When he did his clinicals in the L&D, the doctor told him there was no reason for any medical personel to be around for 98% of births. He is stuck on that 2% that truely need medical interventions. I equated this to eating for him: people eat every day...it is a normal, natural process, but once in a while someone will choke, go unconscous and need medical treatment. I dont know how else to help him relax about this. Anyone else have DH's with medical training? How did it go?

Sorry this got so long and TIA!!!

My DH is a medic too, and we just had our 2nd UC. Last time he was hesitant at first, but after a lot of telling him how much it meant to me, then showing him what *I* knew about birth and the way it SHOULD be (outside of what he's trained in...which is EMERGENCIES), then I kinda just dropped it and he ended up being fine with it when the time came. After that, he was convinced we should never have a baby in a hospital (barring any complications that would require one) again. And he totally advocates homebirth. So needless to say our 2nd UC was a given, he never even questioned it.

I LOVE the book "Hearts and Hands: A Midwife's Guide to Pregnancy and Birth. Wonderful, wonderful resource. I also like B.E.S.T. "Birth Emergency Skills Training". Those are my two "go to" books.

As far as certain situations and transfer go, for me it was something I'd judge as it came. Based on my intuition and lots of prayer, I knew that I would know if I needed to go in (during the pregnancy as well). So not much help there. (interestingly enough, this last birth- 13 days ago- I was "stuck" for 6 hours completely dilated and effaced, should have been pushing that baby out but couldn't figure out why he wouldn't descend past my pelvis despite everything being "perfect" for it to happen. Had I been in a hospital or not confident in my body and transferred, I have no doubts they'd have sectioned me. Turns out DS was just big with a big head and took a while to get past that point. NOT a reason for c/s! So glad I was home!!!)

I have never dealt with PPH but I have had Shepherd's Purse on hand for both deliveries, and this time I also purchased Angelica in case of retained placenta. I got both at my health food store.

1babysmom -

Thank You SO MUCH! I will get the two books you mentioned.

DH has agreed to do UC with me, but he "wants his drugs" just incase. Hopefully some info on the herbs, and having them on hand will ease his "helplessness" feeling.

Thanks!

Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year and The Natural Pregnancy Book both have excellent information about herbs for pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum.

Heart & Hands used to be on there too. But it was only a preview, and so it wasn't ALL there.

Ah, I was mistaken about the BEST book. It only goes to page 63. Crap. I don't know why I thought it was all there, but apparently not.
