Potty Training?

Looking for some advice on potty training.

My dd will usually bring us a diaper if she needs to be changed. The past two days she has started pulling up her shirt and brining us into the bathroom where she points at the toilet. We put her on it (don't have a potty chair--so I think its quite uncomfortable) and immediately wants down. The first time, she peed on the floor as soon as we took her off the toilet.

Does this mean she's ready? My mom thinks so and that we should give it a go for a week and see what happens.

Does your opinion change when I say my dd is only 17 months old? I have not planned on trying to potty train this early, but I think shes demonstrating some signs of readiness. I just don't want to force her but know every child develops at a different rate and she might be ready.

Thoughts?

I'd buy a potty chair (or a ring might work better since she already seems okay with the big toilet) and give it a try. Let her guide you. If she's not ready you can stop and start again, no pressure.

Yeah, worse comes to worse, you'll have the seat to use later on.

I would, however, also get a little potty. They're cheap, and they'll let her sit on her own level. While I wouldn't expect any real potty independence at 17 months (it could happen, just wouldn't rely on it), when she is ready to do some toileting on her own a potty she can reach will help that.

Yup I agree go with her on it. I bet she would like the toilet ring (they are cheap as well). My children all started at that age and all but DD2 was trained by the age of 2. Just a fyi, SOME kids can take a while to train when they start this early and that is totally normal. Its so fun when they take action and totally shock us.

The elimination communication area ( in the diapering section) can be a very helpful place.

17 months old is young these days, but if she's ready definitely help her out. my DD's like the potty seats with handles best, but they also make character ones (like elmo) she might like. we have a small potty the kids could reach themselves and a potty ring for each toilet. definitely have gotten a lot of use, so worth it!

my first DD was day-trained at 17 months, my second at 20, so it's certainly a plausible age for training. DD1 pretty much trained herself too... it was more work with DD2 though!

it cant hurt right? Buy a potty and see what she does. She might be ready and she might not but I think that she is old enough to start getting to know it at least.

Thanks, everyone, for the advice!

We bought a potty chair and big girl underwear. I think I might get some potty rings, too and just see what works for her.

Since I have another one coming in June, it would be REALLY nice if she was potty trained by then, but I'm not getting my hopes up.
