Mousse/gel/hairspray-type product

I have super frizzy, curly hair... I'm 'poo-free and that has made a big improvement in how my hair looks/feels but only when it's pulled back in a ponytail (which is how I wear it every. single. day.) Lately I've really wanted to wear it down but it's just way too frizzy, it looks like a rat's nest. I used to use mousse, there was only one kind that worked, so I guess I'm looking for something similar that's all-natural and won't be excessively greasy but will still tame my hair!!

curly girl book recommends a plain non-colored hair gel, go for the cheap stuff without fancy upgrades. I also know some ladies have mentioned using honey and or pure aloe gel, but you would have to play with the amounts to see what would work for you.

I've only shampoo'ed my hair maybe 15 times in the past 6 months, have been going longer with washing and doing mostly conditioner washing, but my hair looks worse than ever... so not much help, but something you can try.

Maybe try aloe gel? I use Lily of the Desert brand aloe gel as a hair gel (but I have straight hair) It may work to set curls? It does not make your hair greasy at all. It dries clear.

I first started using this because my babies are born with a lot of straight hair, that gets in their eyes. The aloe gel is a nice hair gel. It doesn't make their hair crunchy or greasy. Also, it doesn't leave any residue.

I will have to try the aloe then! I know they sell some at my grocery store... thanks, fingers crossed that it works!

Aloe gel

I have wavy/curly hair and I use aloe gel too. Although, really I only started using it a few months back, and I always put my hair in a braid (it's long and I have kids, so down doesn't work too well)! I really just use it to keep the flyaways down. It seems to work pretty well. I used to use professional stuff (I guess I still have some, just don't use it much anymore), but I started getting such bad buildup and itching that I am scared to use it much anymore.
My hubby uses aloe as his hair gel and it seems to work pretty well for him. I've tried using it on my son when I spike his hair, but it doesn't hold long enough (of course, he also thinks it's funny to rub his head along the ground like it is a vacuum cleaner! He's not too careful about his hair; pro stuff doesn't work too well on him either.

You can also use the liquid from soaking flax in water (flax gel). It works better than aloe for me. Do you rinse your hair with rain water? That helps a lot too.
