My husband and I got married 1.5 years ago, and I was behind on my student loans. I was supposed to start paying them that summer, but was on an extremely tight budget. However, I couldn't file for a deferment because I was working under the table as a nanny, and the family I was working for refused to file taxes. I couldn't say, "I am unemployed" because they wanted me to be actively searching for a job & prove it to them--something I couldn't do while working full time. I also couldn't leave my job to find another where I WASNT working under the table, because that was the only stability I had and wouldve been unable to pay my other bills. So, husband and I got married in the fall, and intended to start paying the loans off as soon as we moved into our house...of course, one thing after another things happened to our extra money each month and, long story short, I've now defaulted on my loan. They did *not* take our tax return that we got less than 2 months ago. We just moved to Washington state, and the military housing allowance here is SO LOW, and rental prices are very high. In Florida, we were using part of that housing allowance just to live on, and here, we are paying MORE than our housing allowance JUST for rent. Also, I cannot find a job here, so we have lost even more money per month. We are in the process of buying a house, as our monthly mortgage will actually be quite a bit less than our rent is now. My husband is the only one on the mortgage, as his credit score is in the 700's. However, he checked his credit report today, and MY LOANS are on his credit report suddenly. His score went down 20 points today, as well. We are terrified this is going to keep us from getting our house...which will mean that I have to live in an environment that I feel is unsafe (a rental), that actually costs more than our mortgage wouldve, and he is deploying soon.
I want to pay off my loans, I really do, but right now things are so tight. My husband is so responsible with money and doesn't deserve to have my mistakes on his credit report. Can they do this? Will this keep us from getting our house? Also, if I'm already in default, can I try to file for a deferment so that this situation doesn't get worse? Or is it too late to get a deferment? I eventually want to go back to school but know I will have to resolve this issue first, any way.
