We've been in the country for over 2 years now and always planned on getting chickens, just haven't gotten around to it. Now we have! We ordered 20 day old chicks- 10 mixed Rhode Island Red X Columbian Rocks, and 10 Barred Plymouth Rocks (8 hens, 2 roos). Also ordered 3 turkey poults (toms) and 2 Pekin ducklings! 
The plan is to butcher about half the chickens in the fall, save for 1 rooster. The rest will be layers, the poults are also for the freezer, the ducks are gonna be yard pets. 
Eek, I'm gonna be busy!! They are set to arrive April 13.
I'm originally a big city girl, from Toronto! I moved to a small town when I married dh and then we finally found out dream home out here in the boonies on 10 acres with an old farmhouse, a barn, orchard, berries, and woods. We have a barn cat, 2 weeks ago we got a dog (golden retriever pup), and last week dh got an old pickup truck. Now we're getting poultry!!!
