Alternatives to an upper GI?

DD (4.5) is scheduled to see a gastro April 8th for her ongoing stomach pain. The ped wanted us to do an upper GI, but the gastro office said to hold off because they may not want that test done at all.

If the gastro wants an upper GI, is there an alternative? We have a few major reservations about an upper GI - the amount of radiation she would be exposed to with both the drink and x-rays, as well as the emotional damage that will be done because we would have to force her to drink the barium stuff. DD is extremely strong-willed and I don't see her drinking it willingly. So far she has been excellent with blood work and regular x-rays, no fear of the needle, etc. But eating and drinking things she doesn't want to have always been an issue with her and she will not give in without a serious fight. I can't imagine how we would "force" it and shudder to think of what it would do to her trust in us.

Would a scope show the same things? We would be more comfortable with the risks of sedation than with the upper GI if its avoidable and the scope can tell the same things.

My dd has had 4 scopes total (so far). They were LESS invasive and were better as a diagnositic tool than a UGI. I would push for a scope. If you have any ?'s, feel free to PM me. Hugs.

Thank you! From what I've read, that seems to be the best way to go. Thank you for the offer to answer any questions, I may take you up on that if the gastro wants the scope done.
