Just found out!

Hi All! I just found out that I'm pregnant...probably about a month along....and I'm a bit paranoid. I've read about what to eat and not to eat, and for the last month (not realizing I was pregnant) I've just about eaten everything on that list and drank my share of red wine, and some vodka also. I just read that the brain, spine, and other things develop during the first 28 days. Should I be as worried as I am or can I relax?? I just started taking folic acid also.

If by a month along you mean your last period was a month ago... relax. You would have only gotten pregnant 2 weeks ago, and the babys placenta does not start functioning until sometime around 6-8 weeks (4-6 weeks past conception, since pregnancy is counted from your last period and not from time of conception)

Its best to start treating yourself pregnant now though!

The first day of my last period was Feb. 5th or 6th, so i'm about a week and a half late...peed on 2 sticks and POSITIVE! Ok...so I shouldn't freak out...just start fresh from this point on. Is there anything particular that i really should be eating besides your basic balanced diet? I eat chicken and turkey, but no beef, lamb, pork, etc...

I think water and protein are pretty important in pregnancy, other than that you just survive the first trimester, right! And congrats!

In addition to a good prenatal vitamin, a DHA supplement, and probably a calcium supplement too (to get 1000mg/day)...a good, balanced diet with veggies and protein. Beef and pork are fine if they are cooked well (I avoid ground meat unless I cook it). Fish is good too- See here.

And, I really like this book...The 100 Healthiest Foods to Eat During Pregnancy, because it explains the importance of each and breaks it down into trimesters.
