Cold water only, front loader, hard water

I am a noob for cd. Wanted to with dd but got way overwhelmed and gave up. I am going to try and use prefolds and covers this time around for at least the summer months.

I have a front loading washer (so there are the compartments for detergent, bleach, and softner but obvioulsy "soaking" isn't quite the same) HOWEVER i only have cold water hooked up to it (it's hooked to the hose). The water is HARD and it's an old place/old pipes. I also do NOT have a dryer hook up (i have a dryer though...it's decorative at this point ) but the good ole az sun (well when i get the laundry line put up). I've recently read that vinegar with hard water can INCREASE the smell and/or not get things as clean or leave a residue. Which I'm guessing to be pretty true...I make my own detergent and although I like it I am seeing that things aren't getting clean. There's a mildewy smell on many things especially towels (the detergent i make of course has vinegar in it) and the stains in my clothes seem to stay more often than not. Now I would like to stick with making my own detergent but I haven't seen any recipe that does NOT include vinegar. If I can't stick with that besides staying away from optical brighteners/softners can I use any detergent? I don't have the money to spend it on anything fancy.

Since I can't really use vinegar to soften the diapers, remove smells or as a bacterial killer am I going to have really gross diapers? Should I use a teensy bit of bleach in each load? Am I going to drive myself nuts trying to do this with minimal laundry facilities?

Hmmm - an interesting challenge!

That sounds almost like a hand-washing situation (you're like a pioneer lady, or a missionary!) - and I imagine that most people would recommend flats in that kind of situation. Just because the more layers you have to wash, the harder it's going to be to get the diaper clean.

Is it an option to either switch to (homemade) flats? Or to manually add hot water to the washer? Or both? I would feel pretty unsure about how clean my prefolds were getting in a FL washer with cold water.

What detergent recipe are you using? The detergent I make is basically soap/borax/washing soda - I don't know about the vinegar.
