Yeast

How do you feel about it?

It's odd because it kind of reveals how shaky the line is.

I feel weird about making up a bowl of bread dough, activating the yeast and having them eat up all the gluten or whatever they eat - and then putting them in the oven.

I mean, vegetables and fruit are living too - all our food is living. But we harvest them, we don't put them in the oven alive.

Am I just being weird?

It's kind of a pick your poison thing in my book. Really, our bodies and mouths are full of yeasts and bacteria that work for us, and then we either eat them or poop them out to die. I would just not want to get paranoid about it - haha. I don't mind yeast, (they eat sugars btw) and it's true - the line IS shaky! But we must all draw that for ourselves. My line says yeast is ok. There is an eastern religion (forgot which one ) that practices extreme veganism, and they wear masks over their mouths and noses so that they don't breath in any microorganisms that might be in the air. They also sweep the ground before them before they walk to avoid stepping on any tiny creature.

Would eating or breathing micro-organisms kill them, though? I am thinking many of them intend to be eaten or breathed.

But yeah, you set the line where you set it. Fruititarians have a point, for example - fruit is the only thing that WANTS to be eaten (other than, maybe, micro-organisms as I wondered above).

Yeast isn't part of the animal kingdom. I have no more trouble with eating yeast than I do with eating mushrooms. Or soaking beans before I cook them, for that matter.

Yes it would. Your digestive enzymes and immune systems break them down. That's why people with strong immune systems don't get sick as often - their bodies kill the microorganisms!
