Best hip carrier for a 10mo old??

Mamas,

I need a new carrier desperately!! DD naps on my back in the ergo but does not like to just hang out on my back if she is not tired. She likes to be in arms most of the day but prefers me to just carry her on my hip....so not comfortable or practical with a 3yr old as well. What carrier can I wear her on my hip comfortably??? I tried the ergo on the hip and it hurt my shoulders within mins. I am looking forward to your suggestions

A lot of people like ring slings for hip carries, but I never got the hang of them at all.

I use a short woven wrap (2.7 metres), sometimes refered to as a rebozo. It works a lot like a ring sling as far as positioning goes, but it uses a slip knot instead of rings, which I find easier to adjust. You could also use a longer woven wrap for a hip carry, but it would need to be tied differently of course.

I've also seen the Scootababy hip carrier. It's like a soft structured carrier specifically made to be worn on your hip.

I love my Storchenwiege Ring Sling. I just put DS (21 mos, 26 lbs) in it today for 20 min and it was quite comfy. He won't tolerate back wraps or SSCs at all right now He wants to walk everywhere, and then gets tired and wants to be carried! Anyways, yes, RS do have a bit of a learning curve, but I find completely unpadded ones to be the best. I think mine has what's called a gathered shoulder. It's worth trying to figure out. Look for one with contracting rails - makes it easier to figure out which rail to tighten, and where all that fabric is going.

The scootababy would make a hip position worlds more comfortable than the Ergo.

I came here to ask the same thing! I'm going to look at the ones suggested.

I was gifted a beach wrap (SPOC) by a friend who traveled overseas. I tied a knot in the end of it and used it as a rebozo style hip carry from about the age of the OP's DC till my DD was about 20mo. It was quick, easy, and allowed me to have two hands and for DD to watch everything my hands were doing.

She really loved it. People would be amazed at our little routine for in and out. Hold her on hip, grab the wrap by it's knot, toss it over our heads, slide it down creating her seat and pulling fabric up her back for support. Then I'd adjust it over my shoulder and be ready to go. To take her out, lift her up high, resting on your shoulder, one foot out at a time, and then she's down.

It's great for short trips, but for anything longer than 20-30 minutes she had to go on my back because a hip carry is strenuous. I wish she wasn't so big now, I'd totally still use it.

for short periods, or lots of up-down-up-down, pouch or ring sling. for longer periods, scootababy or a wrap in a hip carry.

We use an Ellaroo hip carrier for my 9-month-old DS. He loves it and so do I! It's easy to use and very comfortable for both of us.
