Would they live? flower question

Thread Starter
My 5 year old has been waiting patiently (not really) since December to plant some flowers in a flower pot.

So my dh went out and got some potting soil and flower seeds and a couple pots. I would have told him to wait if he had asked lol.

Its about 60 degrees here in MN today..My dd has already seen the goods so she won't take no we have to wait for an answer.

Will the flowers grow? or is it just way too early? They are all a mix of seeds with different flowers in them.

I know nothing about gardening at all.

Also this summer we want to plant giant sun flowers, when is it a good time to do that? Hopefully before I get too huge?

Thanks so much for any input you can give me!

You can try it and see what happens. What information is on the packet? What flowers are in the seed mix?

You might want to ditch the mix and start with a single specimen. Something that grows fast. Different flower seeds require different starting techniques, mixes tend to be disappointing.

I'm not sure how they'd work in pots but poppies are fast growing and easy to start. You can throw them on the snow and they will grow in the soil when it melts.

I know I grew a sunflower in a small pot as a kid. Nasturtiums are easy as well but you have to scarify them first (nick the seed coat with nail clippers).

Of course unless she wants to see the growth from seed to plant, you can always go the easy route and pick up some annual bedding plants from a nursery.

I just planted some flower seeds yesterday, and I'm getting them started in the hopes of putting them outside in a month or so. If you can set up a little mini-greenhouse by a sunny window, I think they should grow just fine!

I'm a couple of zones warmer than you, and started my flower seeds a couple of weeks ago. They're in small pots, so they won't get too big in the weeks before I can transplant them. Yours won't need transplanting so they'll be great in bigger pots. Since you're not transplanting yours, I think it would be similar - you're just starting your seeds. Then, when it's warm enough, take them outside!

I would say give starting then inside a go.

Also, my kids have always gotten a big kick out of starting sunflowers in pots.

I actually just planted giant sunflowers in my garden yesterday but I'm in AZ and it's already almost 80 during the day. It's my first time....seed packet says they get 12' tall. Yikes!!!

Some plants transplant poorly. Sunflowers and marigold do well in pots, and tolerate transplanting well.
