OK -- Give it to me straight - Page 2

i would go ahead and do it, but i'm a cd nut so that's easy for me to say. LOL. i haven't bought sposies on a regular enough basis to be able to tell you what the savings are.

- I didn't really have a problem with disposables with DD leaking -- will this become more of an issue with cloth provided I'm using a properly fitted cover?
I've had pee leaks with cloth, but only with pockets with fleece or suedecloth inners. I've had VERY few leaks with natural inners, and I never use a cover (I use fleece pants over fitteds), and I use really thin fitteds- thinner than a pf, I'd say.
I'd say that with a pf and a good fitting cover, you'd be quite unlikely to have leaks. If you did have leaks, it would just be a matter of needing a doubler or thicker pf.

- What about overnights? Will I have to change diapers in the middle of the night?
Ime, night diapering is tough. lol. Sposies leak half the time at night for me, because ds is a side sleeper. I have a cloth solution that rarely leaks, so for me, cloth is a much better choice. It did take some trial and error to find a staydry night solution that didn't leak though. Trust me, I *totally* would have just used sposies if they'd worked!

- Will I be setting myself up for failure if I expect that cloth will roughly equal in terms of work and functionality to disposables?
You need to change cloth more often.

We made the switch... but not brave enough to try nights.

Idiotic moment for me... sorry!

I say give it a try, if you hate it you can stop. I love cloth diapering but you won't know if you don't try.

I have a few diffrent types of diaper but I'm mainly using prefolds with bummi covers and 1 sposie at night. My LO doesn't fit our thicker nighttime diapers yet so untill she does the $11 package of huggies makes more sense than trying to find tiny overnight fluff... However I notice the diaper service says 80 diapers a week for a newborn...thats just shy of 12 a day I'm averaging 18-20 with my current 6 week old I'd MAYBE squeeze by with 10- 12 if I wasn't changing right when she wets..

UPDATE: Give it to me straight

I thought I'd post an update to this thread since I started it and it's still getting some replies.

I spent some time playing around with a small stash of covers and prefolds. They weren't bad, once I figured out how to position the diaper on the baby to keep the EBF poo explosions inside the diaper (I found the 'jelly roll' fold worked great for this). But, all in all, I just felt like they were just too much work - I didn't like them for the following reasons:

1) A diaper service was not going to save any $ vs disposables

2) My hubby couldn't seem to get the hang of the different folds you had to do under the cover and kept hurting himself on the Snappi.

3) If I washed them myself, the prefolds took FOREVER to dry - so I was doing 3 wash cycles (cold, hot, hot) and 2 full dryer cycles on high. All this extra energy usage is not very 'green' and negated any cost savings of washing them myself. Hanging them out to dry in the climate I live in is not always an option, so this is important.

So...

I bought 20 Bum Genius 3.0 One Sizes. And, I have to say, the laundry isn't as bad as I thought it would be - they dry quickly overnight or outside w/o any time in the dryer. Overnights are no trouble so far, and I haven't had a single leak (knock on wood) since I went pocket. Plus, my hubby can handle them no problem.

I spent about 350$ on the stash of 20 (including accessories), and considering they are supposed to last the full pottying-life of my DS, I will see a cost savings over the diaper service and disposables.

Here's hoping they work as well in a few months as they do now!
