Can we remove the "support" beam from our sidecar crib?

We have the Gulliver crib from Ikea as a sidecar. When we took the long side off (to sidecar) the instructions said to attach this board down at the bottom, which would make sense for using it as a "big kid" bed. But for a sidecar, do you think this piece is necessary to hold the bed together?

The reason I ask is because this board prevents me from getting her crib mattress flush with our mattress. So instead of pushing it up to our mattress and having pool noodles or towels between the mattress and the crib's long side, the towels are in between her mattress and ours.

Thoughts?

Anyone?? I guess this bar is also called a daybed bar. DH doesn't want to remove it, but I think it would help with getting her mattress right up against ours.

Is the mattress base screwed into the frame?

Is the mattress base screwed into the frame surrounding the bed? It is it, it might be possible to leave the bar off. But if it is not, I think the whole thing might become a bit unstable if you leave the bar off.

Have you tried setting it up without the bar and then really shaking it? That might give you an idea of what might happen if your DC starts jumping on it.
