Thrush and Bad Latch

Thread Starter
My son is 5 weeks old. He's never had a good latch, but it didn't hurt and he's been gaining well, so I just let it go. However, now I have thrush and I really want to improve his latch to help with the pain. At this point, though, he strongly prefers his shallow latch. If I get him to open wide, he unlatches. If I insist, he refuses to nurse. I'm scared I'm setting him up to reject the breast. What do I do?

I am sure that others will have great advise for you, but can you contact a local LLL leader and or a IBCLC?

What are you doing for the thrush? Have you tried Apple Cider Vinegar, gentian violet etc. Anyway to get back to a good latch you could try nursing in the bath with low lighting etc providing a re-birthing experience for him and then try the biological nurturing position whilst in the bath, letting him latch on completely by himself to see if he latches that way better, www.biologicalnurturing.com it's run by Susan Colson a LLL Leader and IBCLC - she's great!! it's easier to go to the website than for me to explain the position etc, anyway hope this helps alittle, it may take a little perseverance. You may also have to look into his upper palate in his mouth or a tongue-tie further back in the mouth if this doesn't improve
