should I be concerned?

Warning: TMI (poop-related).

DD is 8 months old and BF. We introduced solids a couple weeks ago, but the last time she had any was Sunday, and she's eaten probably a max of an ounce a day. She usually poops several times a day (I haven't kept track, but most of her 8 or so diapers a day have at least some poop). I know that it's normal for babies to go less as they get older, but it literally changed overnight. Sunday was normal. Then she went all day Monday without pooping at all. Tuesday she pooped once and it was thicker than normal. Wednesday she pooped once and it was thinner than normal. She woke up and was fussy more than usual Tuesday night, and Wednesday morning she was pretty much inconsolable for about an hour, which is very unusual. Other than that, her mood has been fine. I have no idea if any of these things are related, or if I should be worried about it or not. Any ideas?

My DD is 8 months old, and her pediatrician said it's normal for babies to poop less often as they start solids. They can go several days without pooping sometimes (and it's nothing to worry about). My DD is pretty unpredictable. Some days she'll poop 1-3 times, some days not at all. Last week she went 2 days without going. She more than made up for it the next day. And depending on what she's eaten, the color, consistency and smell are always different. It's like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get!

I wouldn't be too worried about it. I found that if mine hasn't gone for a while & she gets fussy, rubbing her tummy helps. And you can always call an advice nurse if you're concerned about it.

mine went 8 days without pooping when we introduced solids. And it happed overnight just like you. He was going 2x per day before. He wasn't uncomfortable an the poop wasn't hard, just thicker and lots of it. Now he's going more like every 4 days and breastfeeding somewhat less. I suspect his gut is getting more efficient with absorption.

your babe may have a little thicker stool, but not necessarily "constipated". An ounce sounds like a lot to me. My babe was really upset for over a day, and then made a thicker than normal poop. After that, she was fine. It was some banana that did it to her.

After reading your post, my first thought was..."Does she have gas?" and "What food did you introduce her to?"

With DS1 he'd get gassy and cranky with certain foods and the constancy of his poop changed from thin to thick all the time. I think it because of what he was eating & the combo of breast milk too.

How many times a day are you offering solids?

I haven't noticed any gassiness. Her most recent food was applesauce, which she had over the weekend. We offer solids once a day, but we haven't in the last few days because I got a little worried about her possibly being stopped up.

To add to the mix, she has a tooth poking through all of a sudden! I just noticed it when she got up from her nap, and it wasn't there yesterday, because I checked after all the crankiness. Her other 2 teeth came in without any fussing, so I didn't really think that was it at the time, but it looks like it probably did at least contribute.

Thanks! Sounds like it's probably pretty normal then. I had hoped so, but I remember DS's pooping changing a lot more slowly, so I was kinda .

Yeah, I didn't think it was constipation, per se, since when she did poop, it was still pretty wet. I'm just used to her pooping almost constantly.

I'm estimating on the amount of solids, but basically she gets either a small ice cube size bit (I make most of her food in batches and freeze it), which is supposed to be about an ounce, or 1/3-1/2 of a 2 1/2 oz jar. She probably would eat more if I offered, but since she's only 8 months, I don't want her to decrease nursing. I kinda thought an ounce was not all that much....should I be giving her less?
