1/4 Cow Question

I am splitting 1/4 cow with my MIL. The price is based on hung weight x $3lb. She told me in an e mail the hung weight was 151.25 x $3lb = $453.75 for the quarter.

As I was dividing the meat in half today I am weighing the meat and I have at 113lbs.

Is that normal?

Actually that yield is excellent. What I can take home and eat is generally about 60% of the hanging weight (although I don't weigh the bones or tallow--just the meat).

is that for grass fed beef? I am able to get it for about $5/lb for a 1/4. You must be where they have LOTS of cattle. Over here in the Mid-Atlantic it is far and few between to find grass fed beef....or grass fed anything for that matter.

I get grass fed (midwest) for market price on the hoof plus processing or about $1.85 - $2.75 per pound. This is non-certified organic. We know the farmer. Everyone and their brother has cattle out here (except us).

OP - 113lbs. sound sounds about right for a choice beef. You can usually expect about 70% of yield from the hanging weight. You got a little over 70%. That's still average.

Yea, I just moved from OH, where I got grass-fed for about $2.75 for a 1/2 to mid-atl. where I can't find it cheaper than $6. I'm so upset!

Thanks for the replies. It sounds like we got our fair share. I've never bought 1/4 cow before. That does include 17 1/2 lbs of soup bones but they do have meat on them.

kyndmamaof4 - Yes it is grassfed beef. It is organic but not certified organic. I know the farmer. I'm in Ontario.
