Jamie's in town today.

I received the following school announcement this weekend:

Quote:
As part of his ABC television reality series, “Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution”, Chef Jamie Oliver is inviting all Cabell County parents, teachers, staff and members of the community to attend a “Cooking Boot Camp” this Tuesday, April 13 from 2:00 to 5:00 PM.

The Boot Camp will take place outside at the First Baptist Church of Kenova, which is located at 1120 Poplar Street. The church and its clergyman, “Pastor Steve”, are featured in the television program along with staff and students at Central City Elementary and Huntington High School.

At the event, which will be recorded by ABC, those attending will visit different Boot Camp “tents” to see and taste first hand some of the new meals that Oliver and the Cabell County school cooks have been or will be preparing for students. The cooks will also be demonstrating some of the new equipment purchased by the Cabell County Schools Food Service Department to assist them in the preparation of fresh menu items.

In addition to the demonstrations, there will also be a special tent where parents and teachers can learn more about the importance making healthier choices when it comes to what their children are eating.

“Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution” is a series about healthy eating that is airing each Friday evening at 9:00 PM on the ABC television network.
I'm seriously considering going. I went around the house last night, after getting this phone call, FREAKING OUT, yelling and screaming, "Jamie's here! Jamie's here!"

I want to go see more about this Food Revolution! I love it!!

Here is a menu from our district, which I found to be pretty bad. The breakfast is just appalling.

holy smokes - I got a sugar rush from just reading the menu

Those subsidies could be redirected into crops that don't lend themselves so well to crapification. Like, say, vegetables. Subsidies could also be redirected to ensure that families could buy fresh foods *without* several packaging & retailing middlemen. The fact that USDA subsidies go to the remaining handful of huge big-ag producers says a LOT about USDA priorities and indicates that the health and wellbeing of the American people is not one of them.

Ok, off the soapbox now. I just think the problem is that people don't realize how what the USDA says in terms of what they should eat contrasts with what the USDA does in terms of making certain kinds of food affordable.
Word to this. USDA is not much more than a face for Monsanto, Cargill and the like. I seriously doubt the interest of schoolchildren is prioritized over the profits of big ag.

Sweet! Dh and I couldn't believe that in the last episode, Jamie had trouble even getting people to come to his kitchen. I'd think people would be all over it just for the chance to get on TV. I know if I lived closer I would've been hanging out in there with Jamie all the time.

Pics that tell a little bit of a story.

When Jamie was tlaking with the parents in the Parents Tent, he asked what we thought of the school going back to the old menu on Fridays. I said, "It undermines what you're doing!" Another mom spoke, so he took time with her, and then he talked to me more. He asked me again what I'd said and I repeated it and continued telling him that I told my kids to eat Jamie's food, eat Jamie's menu. It's better for them.

The menu changes have NOT hit their school yet, as I had thought.

Later on someone asked me to sign a release and get my pic, which I ok'd and then he informed me that another guy (Evan) would interview me later. Later was about an hour.

Evan asked if I learned anything today, how has it changed things for my family, and is there anything I'd like to tell Jamie.

What I learned: There's an AWFUL LOT of sugar in the flavored milks and it's REQUIRED BY THE USDA to be served!!!!

How it's changed our family: My dh is more healthful-oriented and Jamie has changed the schools and it's been an inspiration and a push in the right direction. My dad is diabetic and I don't want to get it, I don't want my kids to get it, so we're glad for the changes.

What I'd like to tell Jamie: THANK YOU SO MUCH for doing this! Thank you to your family! I am SO GLAD you're doing this! Thank You!!!

Wahoo! I'll send you my autograph! LOL And when I'm accepting my awards for being such a smooth babywearing MDC mama while on national TV, I'll be sure to dedicate it to all my MDC mama friends on the Jamie Oliver thread.

He is so genuine, so honest about his desire to make changes, I get irritated when some of our friends and other locals say they don't like him because he says everyone here is fat.

I think ppl aren't seeing the big picture. They're too emotional about it.

When I spoke (and when the other spoke), he listened. He focused and HEARD our concerns and comments.

OH! A reporter from The Independent, a newspaper in Ashland, KY, asked my info to quote me.

I'll be watching for tomorrow's edition.
