What is this dog?

I'm thinking corgi mix? We found him at the park today. He's really friendly and hopefully we can find him a forever home. We can't keep him, our dog is not happy with him and we just don't have the resources for another dog. There's no humane society here though. The animal shelter euthanizes after 2 days There's 2 rescue groups and we've called them but no one has room for him. We can only keep him til Monday and then we'll have to take him to the shelter. I did post him all over craigslist and also on freecycle so hopefully someone will be able to take him or find him if he's lost but it's this big huge park and I have a feeling someone dropped him off out there.

Hard to tell without a side shot too. Maybe corgi/terrier mix.

Have you brought him to a vet/shelter to check for a microchip?? I would also post signs at the park.....maybe bring him to your local vet and explain the situation....some hospitals will take on friendly dogs and try and adopt them out or may have clients who are looking for a new dog.

I'll try to get a better shot tomorrow. THe more I look at him the more I wonder if he has some chihuahua in him. We called around. This town is so ridiculous. It supposedly has 40,000 people and yet no humane society? The animal shelter pretty much said please don't bring him in because if we do we'll have to put him down almost immediately - oh and btw we're going to ask you for a $20 "donation" if you do bring him in. We called a few vets, they didn't care. The 2 rescues don't have room and don't seem to care a whole lot. One was supposed to call us right back and never did, the other one actually suggested we take him back to the park and just drop him off.

The park is large and in the middle of nowhere. There is no housing around it. He didn't seem like a wanderer he was just going around one playground and the duck pond to drink. He's still fairly clean looking, looks like he's been eating ok, etc so I doubt he's been out there long. I've posted on craigslist and freecycle. Oh and we asked the shelter about the microchip and they said they didn't have a scanner? WTH? I sure hope our dog never gets lose as it seems it would be impossible to find a lost dog around here!

Poor little thing. Right now we're finding it really hard to keep our dog and that dog separated. I'm also keeping it mostly away from the kids since they can get a bit rough sometimes. I'm just really not sure what to do with him if we can't find him a home soon or someone who can take him.

I'm also seeing a lot of chihuahua in him. My first thought was chihuahua/beagle, but its hard to get a good idea from the pictures. Do any of the local vets have scanners? If they microchip, they should have scanners. The shelter not having a scanner is scary- I wonder if you could get one donated (I *think* microchip companies provide scanners free of charge to shelters? In which case the shelter may just not have the time or resources to request one. I could be wrong) or, publicize it- write a letter to the editor to your paper perhaps. If vets are pushing microchipping in your area, pet owners will be concerned that the shelter cant scan them. I know, that wasn't your original question...

Are there other rescue groups nearby? My city has a few, but then there are many more in surrounding areas. Some are even state-wide, so while they aren't headquartered in my area, they might be able to take in dogs if you call. I normally use petfinder for a fairly comprehensive listing of rescues close to me.

My sister was in this same situation last week- the dog did end up at the shelter. She's heartbroken, because he was a nice dog, but she couldn't keep him in her apartment, rescues are all full, and really, its not her fault someone couldn't be responsible and do the right thing for their dog. If you have to go the shelter route, do try to keep that in mind- this is NOT your fault. Poor little guy. I hope something opens up for him.

No we live in a remote area. Next closest town is 2 hours away.

I put him in my dog's old kennel overnight. He was in there quite awhile since we went to bed early. He was in it almost 11 hours and when I went to get him this morning and let him out he hadn't pottied at all. He must be house broken. I was pretty sure before that he was by the way he desperately wanted inside the house - he must have been an inside dog.

I really hope someone lost him and they're looking for him. He seems like a well cared dog. Yet, why would you be at the park with your dog with no collar and then just leave if he got away? He really does not seem like the running away type. He stuck near us the entire 3 hrs we were at the park.

I'm going to take him by the shelter today. Keeping my dog and the kids away is not easy at all, plus the weather is supposed to take a turn so I don't really feel I can keep him outside anyways. I sure hope someone finds him there or he gets adopted. Ugh. I would have felt bad if I'd left him at the park and now I feel bad that I picked him up!

ETA: I'll ask again about the scanners at the shelter when I drop him off. Their website says they are very poorly funded, they are actually run by the police dept here, and that they do not have any vets or animal behaviorists on staff. My guess is that over all it's probably mostly run by one person who doesn't really know what they're doing but they're doing their best, kwim?

Bring him to your local vet hospital. Get him scanned first!!!!

If any of the local vets offer microchipping, they WILL have a scanner, as they need it to verify that the chip was correctly placed. Please call around - surely someone has one!

Well I just dropped the little guy off. The lady there was super nice and actually she runs one of the rescues as well. She said they have a vet come in with a scanner once or twice a week. She also said the ones that seem lost or would def make good adoptables they try to keep up to 6 days as long as they have room. I told her how he was good with my kids and he appeared to be house trained so hopefully even if no one adopts him she'll take him into his rescue.

Omg, I wanted to adopt all the dogs there! There was one that looked like a carbon copy of our own rescue dog. I swear I almost said, "never mind, I'll take them all!"

Ever since I was little I've always wanted to run a rescue. I've always said if I won the lottery I would get a TON of land and resources and have a huge no-kill shelter.

Ugh, can you tell I'm wallowing in guilt?
