What do I NEED for an EC'd newborn?

Hi Mamas,

I am due next month with my 3rd child. I EC'd dd2 but was using dd1's cloth stash and payed absolutely no attention to what I used or how much of it I used. Since then we thought we were done so I sold every single diaper I owned.

By the time this baby is born it will most likely be warm enough that I can just wrap him/her in a CPF and pop the babe in my sling. Is this a good idea or do I need covers and fitted diapers and pockets for the first little while? I really can't remember.

I have about 12 fitted diapers and too many covers for those 12 diapers that were handed down to me from a friend. Other than that I have 2 pockets. I'm trying to decide what I want to buy. I'm not particularly concerned with getting peed on but would like to avoid it happening often.

Any and all advice would be much appreciated

12 might be enough for you, i don't know.

right now, at 18 months and in training pants, hawk has 12 and the most we go through is 4 in a day. once we got EC really going--about 2 weeks into starting--we would usually be 4 or less per day, and most days, we were at 1 per day anyway.

it's up to you, but that seems like a good number to me.

the early newborn days, we went through a TON of diapers, because we were noticing/changing every wet. It took a while to get started with dd, too - we started making sounds for her at 2 weeks, offering a potty at 2 months, and she didn't really start using it till 3 months. There's no way we would have survived with 12 dipes in that period.

This time (babe due any day), I bought a ton of flats, and I'm hoping we can get things moving a bit faster. But I'm glad to have a full stash in case it takes a few months again!

With my DS I did pocket diapers, and 20 was too many. I don't know if that really helps, but...

IIRC once we started pottying him, diaper wets went down really quickly, and we rarely had poopie ones. For us I'd say 10-15 was good to have a few days supply.

For newborn (like the first 2 weeks), we went through like 10-15 diapers a day, even when we were catching a lot! Because of this, when we were at home we just used a prefold with a diaper belt. Or even just one of the inserts for a pocket diaper and the diaper belt because ds was so little. We reserved the fitted cloth diapers and pocket diapers for when we were out.

After the first month, when we all got better at ec we didn't go through as many diapers, but still kind of kept the same system. I do remember having an extra small diaper cover that we would just throw over the prefold & diaper belt system when we were going out. And that seemed to work nice because if we had a miss, we could just change out the prefold and keep the cover.

Everyone does it different, but if I had to make a list of our diaper essentials for the first 3 months of ec, it would look something like this:

30-40 prefolds, or flats
1-4 diaper belts (different sizes to use as baby grows)
2 diaper covers
6-10 fitted pocket diapers (we use fuzzi bunz)

Hope that helps

Thanks everyone . I had never heard of a diaper belt before. That seems like just the thing for us . I'm going to try to make a few of my own and use those with some CPF's along with what I already have.

dd2 and I fell into the groove of EC pretty much right away (with lots of pee misses because she would go SO often). I honestly don't think that she ever once pood in a diaper. I'm hoping that the same thing will happen this time around.
