How old are "toddlers"?

In your opinion how old are toddlers? 1-3yrs? 1-4 or 5yrs? When are children children and not toddlers anymore?

In my opinion, toddlers are walking babies -- so from whenever they get mobile (around 1 yearish) to around late 2/early 3. At about 3 (depending on the kid), they become less "walking baby" and more "really little kid/preschooler" -- fully verbal, potty-learned or getting there, starting to develop the tiniest smidge of self-control and ability to play WITH other kids instead of just next to them ...

I think it happened sometime between 3 and 3.5 that she became a "little girl" instead of a toddler. I can't pinpoint exactly when it happened though.

My DD will be three is May and she is definitely not a toddler anymore. I think it happened over the last two months. She keeps up with her 4 year old friends, and has very little "baby" left in her. Considering she is only 2 she is quite independent in the things she can do.

I think it comes at different ages for different kids. I teach ballet and have a class with 2-4 year olds in it and some of the 3.5 year olds still seem so baby-like, and a couple of the almost three's seem much older.

Yeah, it's amazing how much each kid follows his or her own timetable, isn't it? And how even now that my daughter's an eight-year-old, once in a while a little flash of her baby self will still peek through ...

Oh, now I'm going to cry!

I sort of feel like we're quickly leaving toddlerhood behind us. He's only 27 months old, but he's very independant - can get his own snacks and drinks from the fridge - is PL'ed, talks up a storm, plays jokes and pranks on me then laughs and laughs when I fall for it, is starting to play WITH other children, and generally has more in common with kids 6 months to a year (or more) older than him. I thought your first baby was supposed to take longer to develop because they didn't have anyone to copy? I was counting on that! lol
