(Yes, I'm feeling self-congratulatory this morning!)
I fly alone pretty frequently with my two kids (ages 6 and 3). I find the worst time (besides getting through security) is when we're getting settled, waiting for the plane to take off, and taking off. We can't have a lot of stuff out and it's loud. My kids don't particularly enjoy looking at books by themselves.
So for this trip, I bought them each a clipboard and attached a pen. (I got these new ultra-fine Sharpies that don't bleed through paper so they'd work even if the kids were holding them upside down.) Then I tore out a bunch of different workbook/coloring book/puzzle sheets and clipped them on. So the kids could do them on their laps and had a wide variety of activities (mazes, dot-to-dots, hidden pictures, etc.) to choose from.
It was a good way to use up old activity books that have been lying around, too.
They worked so well that I think I'm going to keep them in the car now.
