Best place to buy Rapadura?

Where can I find the best price (including shipping) on rapadura? Every place I have found online, the shipping is more than the rapaudura cost! I tried my health food store and Whole Foods, and neither one carry it. Hmmm....

We just found an evaporated cane sugar (all organic, fair trade stuff) at Costco for significantly cheaper than Rapadura. It seems similar enough to Rapadura that we'll use it instead. I'm really excited about it.

Sucanat is the same thing as rapadura, maybe a slight bit coarser. We buy ours at WF and the price is pretty reasonable.

I order it in bulk from Azure Standard, and even with shipping over here to the east coast, it is far cheaper than any other option. I think I paid 50 bucks for 33 lbs, and it was probably under $2 lb. including shipping. I was paying 6.95 for a little over a pound at EarthFare for sucanat, as they don't even carry Rapadura. I think Rapadura tastes way better than sucanat, though they are probably equally healthsome.

Hmmm, see I bought some Sucanat yesterday, but I have read over and over again that it is not as good as rapadura; so that is why I am still searching for it. Am I wrong?

I recall reading that Fallon or WAP didn't use to recommend sucanant BUT has changed their position as the company changed how they make it. So now, it is considered interchangable w/ rapadura. Sorry I don't have it in me to hunt for sources but maybe that'll give you a direction to start your googling.

Another vote for Azure Standard...it's the best price I've found!

From the WAP website:

Q. I'm confused as to which type of sugar is better, Sucanat or Rapadura?

A. Both are fine; both are made by dehydrating cane sugar juice. For a while Sucanat changed the way they made it and were using white sugar, so we stopped recommending the product. But they are now making Sucanat the old fashioned way, so we can recommend it again.

Does anyone know if that applies to all brands of Succanant, or just the Rapunzel brand? I have coupons for the Wholesome brand.

Hey! I just found my answer on their web page:
"Sucanat (DEHYDRATED cane juice) is produced from a pure cane sugar juice, which naturally contains about 13% molasses and 87% sugar. Through dehydration and aeration (hand-paddling, actually), a granular, dry, free-flowing brown sugar is produced which contains all of the molasses inherent in cane juice. It is a source of iron, calcium, potassium, B vitamins and chromium. Nothing is added and nothing is removed."

Whole Foods has the 2 lb. bag on sale for $4.99, and Mothering magazine has a $2 off coupon inside, making it $2.99 for 2 lbs! I found a couple of sticky coupons on some of the bags too.
