Apparently I am laundry incapable! - Page 2

Maybe try Borax? I have no idea if Borax is considered safe for baby clothing, but I've always been told to throw Borax in any time I'm having a laundry problem.

Or possibly an all-natural pet urine odor remover?

Hi Jessi! It's Amanda here - you totally found me on MDC!

Um, I'm not sure about Borax. I have seen mixed reviews for sensitive kids like G. His little butt can get soooooooooo red from the least little thing. I've actually got him back in disposables at night now because he was complaining that his scrotum hurt (and it was red) after about a week with hemp liners against his skin all night. I can't seem to win with this kid!

I will look into the pet odor remover - I wouldn't have thought of that!

All of the pet odor products I have seen are enzyme based. Probably not so great for a kid with sensitive skin.

A quick internet search found many enzyme-free products. I'm probably not going to try it just yet - I'm still waiting to wash a few loads without the synthetic stuff to see if that helps.

I know I am not the best authority on CD washing as I only do it part time. But I have been washing pee bedding for 7 years and for the most part the bedding does not stink when clean.
I know it is probably not "kosher" around here but it works well for me.
I use Xtra (liquid concentrate) that has a long lasting scent, on a normal cycle setting, in hot water and use a scented dryer sheet when they are drying.
I will say that I do not skimp on the detergent but I don't think I use more than the recommended amount...but I definitely do use more than a 1/2 ounce. It does sud a little when washing but not a lot.
If you are concerned with having detergent left in the dipes then just give them a second rinse.

I used to use Sunsations brand liquid detergent. I liked it because it was dye free, but the local stores stopped carrying it.

Also- I have noticed that my kids have stronger smelling pee when they have not had enough water to clean out their system.
Just a thought.... =)

Ah.... depending on the water this could be VERY bad advice. After doing that (and the extra rinse...) it would take me at least 6-10 HOT wash cycles without detergent to get all the detergent out. AND when there's detergent in my dipes they STINK.

YMMV- a lot depends on the water- but be aware that this *could* be a very very bad idea.

My routine for a full load of stinky diapers: first, cold rinse & spin. Prop open the lid and allow a half hour soak between the rinse & the spin. Then, add normal amount of cheap detergent (gain or sun work best) along with a whole cup of vinegar and run on normal. When the washer stops, give a smell. If not stinky, straight to the clothesline or dryer. If still stinky, another cup of vinegar on rinse & spin. If this isn't enough, I'd look into incontinence products. There are lots of laundry soaps & additives especially for the clothing & bedding of people who can't use the toilet, and they are formulated for humans rather than pets.
