Suggestions for sleeping while pregnant?

Hi All,

I'm at 23 weeks, expecting twins in late June/early July and am already having a lot of trouble sleeping. Last night I tossed and turned for 2 hours, even though I felt tired and hadn't had a nap that day. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to get more comfortable at night.

Currently I'm switching back and forth between my left and right side. I use one pillow between my knees and a small wedge-shaped pillow that I made to go under my belly. That was working for a couple of weeks, but the last several nights have been constant switching from side to side, as either my ribs start to ache, the hip I'm sleeping on aches or I feel like I'm not getting enough oxygen as I get a stuffy nose every night.

I saw someone reply in an earlier thread that she used 8 pillows to get comfy. What configuration? Were you basically sitting upright to sleep? Did you have a king-sized bed? We have a guest room and I'm wondering if either I'm going to have to use it, or my hubby will, as I'm starting to crowd him out.

So far my pregnancy is going well. No problems and the twins growth is right on track. I'm VERY thankful for that, but am wondering how I'm going to keep from numerous meltdowns in the near future from lack of sleep. Any suggestions you have on getting more comfortable both at night and during the day are much appreciated.

It's like a training course for when the twins arrive.

Seriously though I got less sleep once they were born, I got better QUALITY sleep hands down. That saved my life, I think.

I slept on my side, cradling a big long body pillow. Then I tucked a big kind sized (firm) bed pillow behind my back. I had two under my head to keep me propped up so I could breath. And I had to switch the whole dang thing several times a night or my hips would go numb. Maybe your mattress is too firm? You could try a feather bed and see if that helps!

I don't know about twin pregnancy, but this pillow helped me immensely during my pregnancy. I think they may be at Target, too. Worst thing about them is changing the cover - it's like a magic act to get it back on but I think it was well worth it.

Turning my pillow top mattress helped me! That's the only other suggestion I have. Good luck!

Sorry to say; but I slept so horribly from about 28 weeks on, it sooooo isn't fair; but Intertwined is right - it's training for when the babies come. I feel 1000% better, and I 'sleep' less now.

I slept best on the couch for the last couple of weeks of my pregnancy, with a pillow between my knees. I liked being able to slightly recline back into the back of the couch but still be on my side.

I slept on the couch for at least the last month. The back support was helpful, and it was just the right firmness. That said, I was still up and down several times a night, not out of discomfort, but having to use the bathroom and restless babies. When I had trouble falling back asleep from restlessness I would drink Mama Calm and that usually did the trick.

After the babies were born, we had to switch the couch cushions around because I had made a huge U shape in the center from my enormous belly!

We got a memory foam mattress topper. The soft on top and firm underneath worked good to support my body and my belly. I also used a pillow between my knees.

I also slept in 3 hour chunks. I would go to bed at 8, get up at 11 to pee and eat, get up at 3am to pee and eat, get up at 6 or 7 to pee and eat . And after the babies were born, they woke every 3 hours too! Worked great.

I found sleeping in a recliner chair very comfortable. Ours has a lumbar support and was the only way I could get comfortable. It was also great for nursing, still is.
