I have 9mos left of mat leave and I don't think I want to go back to my job. The hours are great, the money is good, and I have great childcare close by. The only problem is that it is so boring that I want to shoot myself. I am considering asking my company to create a different position for me, a lateral or possibly downward move to a job where I could actually learn something.
I'm a video editor in a senior but dead-end position and I'm thinking of asking for a transfer to writing/producing. I have little professional experience in that area but I've been with the company 6yrs and the storytelling skills should transfer.
Finances are not really an issue. I need to work, but not full time, and if things don't work out we have enough of a cushion for me to look for a job or even try to start a WAH business.
1. Has anyone tried a move like this, and does it ever work?
2. Or should I just suck it up and be happy I have a decent job while kids are young, postpone all career moves for 5 years, maybe even go part time. I feel like this is what I *should* want but I'm not very patient.
3. If I do try it...do I negotiate with the owner or executive VP? I have a much longer history with the owner but I don't want to piss off the VP by not going through her first. If I got the position the VP would be my boss.
4. When do I bring this up? When I left I told the VP I would likely come back to my old job. She said not to make any decisions until I knew what life was like with two kids
(Gotta love a mom-managed company.)
