What can I give dd to help her calm down and sleep? We need to be up at 5:45AM tomorrow.

She is 13yo and weighs about 90lbs.

Benedryl(all antihistAMINES) is out of the question.

In the past(like 2 yrs ago) we tried Rescue remedy, but it didn't seem to help. Now, I notice they have a children's version. If I were to try it again, would you agree based on her size and age that I should go with the regular/adult kind?

FYI-she hates the taste of and refuses to drink calming, sleepy teas.

Thank you!!

How late will she stay up without you doing anything? I'm inclined to say that at 13, one early morning isn't that big of a deal. She might be tired earlier tomorrow night, but I don't think there's really much to be done other than ask her to get in bed and read a book or something until she's tired.

ETA: I was a night owl in jr. high and hs, even though I had to be up by 5:30 or 6 AM every morning to make the bus. If I needed extra sleep, I took naps in the afternoon. That might be why I don't really think it's a big deal.

What about going out and doing something really active *now* (cause I've read that exercise right before bedtime actually makes it harder to get to sleep, while exercise several hours before bedtime makes it easier to sleep). Would she be interested in going for a bike ride or jog? Do you have access to a pool?

Other than that I wouldn't stress it too much. One early morning won't do her in, and (presumably) she can catch up on sleep later tomorrow (by going to bed early?) if she is too tired.

If you're comfortable with melatonin that will likely help her sleep. If not you could try magnesium though I think with her level of anxiety it may just be a long night/early morning. Hopefully the allergist will be able to put her at ease about her throat swelling fears.

After you pass this crisis you might want to investigate something like Inositol or another supplement that might help with over-all anxiety for her.

to both of you.

Since she broke out in hives, she has not been to sleep before 3AM, a couple of nights it's been more like 5AM. She is afraid of dying in her sleep.

See above answer-this is ongoing...

Yep, against her will I forced her to go for a walk. She has very little energy due to nnot sleeping and not eating much(her choice).

Thanks, yes, I am comfortable with Melatonin! I actually take 10mg sublingually each night. I could give her 5mg.

I will look into your suggestion, too.

Well, just back from the HFS, and got the Rescue Remedy for dc-the adult one contains alcohol-which of course is made from grains, so *if* she was also allergic to wheat, best to stay away form that, too.

Thanks!!

Just wanting to send you both hugs. This must be so hard for both of you. I hope the allergist is able to give you both some relief. That high level of anxiety in itself is draining. Thinking of you both.

Ahh, I missed the back story. Poor thing. I would be scared, too.

Sorry, I didn't realize you were the same person who posted that other thread. Poor girl. I remember when I had mono (at around the same age) I was terrified that my throat would close up and I wouldn't be able to breathe (at one point it got excruciatingly painful and quite swollen). I feel for her.
