And then something like this up top.

It looked like it could easily be doubled up; what do you think? (Too make shorter)

My dream is to have a really lovely robe, maybe satin, bright floral, to slip in to after the birth

Heat and sensation were such a problem for me that I just want to wear a small bikini top and a short skirt (no attachments...for easy access ).

I would like to be somewhat covered as I hope to videotape and I'm just not up to the public nudity thing...although I appreciate other mamas and their openness.

I haven't thought about after birth though...it would be nice to have something comfy and pretty to put on...I guess a robe? Or a nightshirt with easy access for nursing. Course with DD I was fine being naked.

Nope, not dressing up. Going to wear a bikini until I get into the pool then just in a bikini top or naked.

I'm so glad someone asked this! I've been thinking about it too. I want to be somewhat covered for pictures/video, but also want to be comfortable. And I don't yet know if I'm going to birth in the water or not. I'm thinking I'll do whatever is comfortable at the time.
Thanks for all the suggestions ladies!!

It's a great topic! My first birth was a hospital birth, and by the time I labored at home for 24 hours and then finally got there, I didn't really care what I was wearing. In fact, when the hospital gown got soiled, I stripped it off and felt plenty clothed in my own skin. Something about all that intense sensation just makes it less of an issue, I guess! (The nurse did get me a fresh gown, though. )

At home the first time, I labored in a very comfy pajama top and super comfy, loose yoga/pajama pants. When I got in the pool, I put on a black sports bra, and I had an old robe to wrap up in when I got out. I ended up birthing in the ratty robe and sports bra, on the bed. I was NOT thrilled when my DH decided the baby needed skin to ALL skin - now! - and tried to help me get the sports bra off the *wrong* way. Not comfy. (besides, the cord was short and I couldn't nurse, anyway!)

So last time, I said NO to the nursing bra. (and told DH to love on me and the baby but otherwise leave me alone ) I again wore two pieces, pajamas essentially, for laboring until I got in the pool. I'm not sure what I had planned on, but I realized that I could just put on my regular tankini swim suit. It wasn't a maternity one, so eventually the bottoms got uncomfy. (Good timing, as it was, as labor went like a freight train shortly after taking them off!) So I birthed in a halter-top tankini, which was easy to move aside for nursing. I had purchased a wrap-around-and-velcro towel set that I found on clearance for post-birth, so when I got out of the pool, they helped me get wrapped up in that, and we moved to the bed. I think we took the swim top off and left it in the pool for clean up later.

That was a MUCH better experience and I will probably do something similar this time around. I had thought about buying one of the "labor skirts" (binti? something like that...) but I imagine that's better if you're planning to labor on dry land. Though I guess if you're getting any VEs it can feel a little more modest than stripping down, too.

I found a skirt similar to this at the thrift store, and I love it. I might wind up wearing that for the birth instead of a wrap skirt.

I found at a thrift shop 2 gorgeous button- down nightgowns, both a little shorter than knee length. The one I wore part of the labor was red satin with turquoise embroidery. Afterwards I put on the pink one. There are some pictures of me in the pink one, and even though you can tell I'm very tired, every time I see it I think how pretty it looked. The buttons made it easy to nurse, also.
