Old dishes

For the first time in my life I have new dishes. My mother got me a beautiful set while she was visiting for the birth of our baby. I'm not sure what to do with our old ugly, chipped, mismatched dishes. I think there are 2 mugs that could go to the thrift store but the plates and bowls are too chipped. I don't want to put them in the garbage. Any ideas?

If you do crafts, you could always put them in a bag and smash them to shards and then reuse the shards in mosaics or pottery or other things. I once saw something about flowerpot (terracotta) and putting putty on it and then placing shards into it, it was really pretty.

Donate them to homeless shelter.

If you like to go camping, they're handy for a set of camping dishes.

I smash up chipped cups and plates for drainage on the bottom of potted plants.

If you don't camp or garden or craft, then maybe someone you know could use them.

I use my old plates for the kids, that way I am not stressed if they break them accidently.

Some might come in useful for the children (as said), in a workshop (collecting small parts), "coasters" for plant pots, containers for paint or water (craft projects with children), for birds or pets (without sharp edges, obviously).
